Banfield is facing a severe legal battle, charged with four counts of aggravated murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The charges stem from the deaths of his wife, Christine Banfield, 37, and Joseph Ryan, 39, on February 24, 2023. Magalhães, who has pleaded guilty to manslaughter as part of a plea deal, testified for the prosecution. She told jurors she began living with the Banfield family in October 2021 to care for their daughter. An affair with Brendan Banfield allegedly commenced the following summer.
Details of the Alleged Conspiracy
Magalhães's testimony painted a picture of a calculated plan. She claimed divorce was not considered an option by Banfield due to financial and custody concerns. Instead, she stated they created a fake account on the fetish website FetLife, posing as Christine Banfield. This account was used to communicate with individuals, orchestrating a roleplay scenario involving a home invasion and rape at knifepoint.
Joseph Ryan was allegedly selected as the target for this fabricated fantasy. Magalhães testified that on the morning of February 24, 2023, she waited outside the family's home with the child while Banfield allegedly lay in wait nearby. Upon Ryan's arrival, she claimed she alerted Banfield, who then returned to the house.
The au pair's account describes a harrowing scene: entering the home, proceeding to the bedroom, shooting Ryan dead, and then watching as Banfield repeatedly stabbed his wife. Following this, she alleged they called emergency services, reporting an intruder attacking Christine.
Contested Testimony and Evidence
The defence has vigorously challenged Magalhães's credibility and motivations. They highlighted inconsistencies in her story, noting she initially claimed she and Banfield discovered Ryan in the act of stabbing Christine and shot him in response. Jailhouse letters were presented showing Magalhães expressing willingness to take blame for her lover.
However, her stance reportedly shifted amid concerns about a potential life sentence and pressure from her mother. This culminated in her plea deal and cooperation with prosecutors. The defence also scrutinised her mental state, referencing letters describing depression and suicidal ideation while incarcerated.

Items from the au pair's closet, including lingerie-style clothing, were found in the master bedroom. Lead crime scene detective Terry Leach detailed the discovery of the alleged murder weapons in the master bedroom. A knife was found concealed under blankets, blade up, with only the handle visible.
