A Houston mother and her daughter experienced a terrifying early morning ordeal this week when they were abruptly awakened by a loud crashing noise, only to discover an apparently intoxicated man falling through their apartment ceiling from the attic above.
A Frightening Discovery in the Early Hours
Desiree Malone and her daughter were asleep in their Houston apartment when they were jolted awake around 4 a.m. on Tuesday by a sudden, alarming bang. Upon turning on the lights, they were horrified to see a strange man dangling through a newly created hole in the ceiling, gripping a beam to prevent himself from falling completely into their living space.
"When I turned the light on, there was a man hanging from the attic, holding onto the beam so that he wouldn't fall all the way through to our apartment," Malone recounted to Fox 26 Houston. "I screamed and yelled like, 'Who are you?' and 'What are you doing?'" she added, describing the intruder as appearing "out of his mind" and visibly intoxicated.
Disoriented Intruder and Police Response
According to Malone, the man seemed disoriented and mumbled incoherently before managing to pull himself back up into the attic. She reported hearing him talking to someone up there, though it remains unclear if anyone else was present. In the chaotic moments following the incident, Malone and her daughter separated briefly—she called the police while her daughter retreated to her room to get dressed.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and later arrested a man in connection with the incident, charging him with criminal mischief. Authorities confirmed that the individual appeared to be intoxicated at the time, though they have not released his name or an official report detailing the arrest.
Prior Concerns and Lasting Trauma
Malone revealed that she and a neighbor had been hearing unusual noises coming from their attics for approximately two months prior to this shocking event. Neither suspected that a person might be responsible for the disturbances, adding an unsettling layer to the already frightening experience.
While repair crews have since fixed the damaged ceiling in Malone's apartment, the emotional impact lingers. "I just want some kind of help from this apartment," she expressed, stating that she no longer feels safe in her home and is actively seeking to relocate. The incident has left her questioning the security of her living environment and grappling with the violation of her personal space.
