Leicester Murder Investigation: Man Dies After Stabbing Near De Montfort University

Leicestershire Police have launched a major investigation following the fatal stabbing of a man in his 20s in Leicester city centre, close to the campus of De Montfort University. The tragic incident has prompted a significant police response and left the local community in shock.

Emergency Response and Fatal Outcome

Police were called to Oxford Street at approximately 5pm on Tuesday 3 February after receiving reports that a man had collapsed following a stabbing. Emergency services, including the ambulance service, attended the scene promptly. The victim was transported to Leicester Royal Infirmary for urgent medical treatment but, despite the efforts of medical staff, he died a short time later.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and is currently being held in police custody. Detectives from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime Team are leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Initial reports suggest the victim was involved in an altercation with another man in the street before the attack occurred. The suspect reportedly left the scene prior to the arrival of police officers.

Police Appeal for Witnesses and Information

Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, the Senior Investigating Officer on the case, has issued a public appeal for information. "CCTV in the area is currently being reviewed and officers are speaking to potential witnesses to assist with our investigation," she stated. "We know a lot of people came to the aid of the victim before emergency services arrived and we want to thank them for their help. If you were one of these people and you haven't yet spoken to police, please make contact with us."

She added: "If you can help in any way, call 101 and quote incident number 495 of 3 February."

University Response and Road Closures

Several roads in Leicester city centre have been closed by police as part of the investigation following reports of the incident at the De Montfort University campus. The university has released a statement expressing its concern and cooperation with authorities.

A spokesman for De Montfort University said: "We are aware of a very serious incident on our campus. We are working with Leicestershire Police as they launch an immediate investigation. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what has happened. We are offering direct support to students and staff who witnessed the incident."

The university community is being provided with support services in the wake of this distressing event, highlighting the broader impact on educational institutions when violent crimes occur in their vicinity.
