A murder probe has been initiated by police in Londonderry following the tragic death of a mother after a serious incident that has sparked an outpouring of grief across the community. The investigation centres on events at a property in Summer Meadow Mew, where the victim was discovered with injuries.
Police Response and Arrest in the Amy Doherty Case
Police were called to the property shortly after 10.20am on Saturday, where they found Amy Doherty, a mother-of-two, with injuries. She was rushed to hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service but later died from her wounds. In a swift development, a 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
PSNI Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin provided details on the case, stating: 'Officers attended a property in the Summer Meadows Mews area of the city at around 10.20am and located an injured woman at the scene. She was taken to hospital by our colleagues in the NIAS where she sadly died. A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones, who are left trying to come to terms with this shocking loss.'
Detective Inspector Griffin appealed for public assistance, adding: 'Our enquiries are continuing, and I am appealing to anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact our officers on 101 quoting reference 469 – 21/03/26.'

Durkan described the incident as 'heartbreaking and horrific news that a young lady has been murdered in Derry', adding that he was 'thinking of everyone affected' and particularly the family and friends. DUP councillors Julie Middleton, Niree McMorris, and Chelsea Cooke expressed deep shock and sadness, noting the death occurred in the Waterside area. They stated: 'As women representing the city at council, this is utterly devastating news for our city. They emphasised that every woman and girl should 'feel safe in their own home and community'. A friend posted a heartfelt tribute, saying: 'Rest in peace wee Amy Doherty taken from this world away from her wee babies I have no words. You were a gem and the funniest person, the craic was always had with you. A whole town in mourning, shock and anger, the most terrible news ever waking up to this today. A young, beautiful life taken way too soon in the most tragic, evil and most devastating way.'
The friend continued, urging strength for Amy's family: 'Look after your babies and give your mammy, daddy and brothers the strength to get through this unimaginable loss. Rest easy wee dotes. This should never have happened. I have no words, pure evil.' The community remains united in grief as the police investigation progresses, with calls for justice and an end to violence against women echoing across Londonderry.
