Masked Arsonists Target Luxury Bentley in Newcastle Car Park Attack
In a brazen daylight assault, masked arsonists have set fire to a £200,000 Bentley in the car park of a David Lloyd club in Newcastle, sending plumes of smoke billowing into the sky as horrified members watched. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, at the Gosforth location, which is frequented by footballers, sports stars, and residents of affluent suburbs.
Targeted Attack in Broad Daylight
Witnesses described the attack as clearly targeted, with suspects using an accelerant, believed to be petrol, to ignite the vehicle. The Bentley, easily identifiable due to personalised plates, was parked outside the club, which was busy with early morning gym-goers at the time. One club member told reporters, "They were brazen—it was done in broad daylight, and they seemed to know the owner would be there." Firefighters quickly attended the scene and brought the blaze under control, with no injuries reported.
Police Investigation Underway
Northumbria Police have launched an investigation into the arson, confirming that unknown masked suspects poured accelerant on the parked vehicle before setting it alight. A spokesperson stated, "Enquiries are ongoing, and we urge anyone with information to come forward." The force has provided reference number NP-20260331-0200 for tips, which can be submitted via social media, live chat, or by calling 101.
Club's Response and Security Concerns
A spokesperson for David Lloyd Clubs said they are aware of the incident and are assisting police with their investigations, declining further comment. This attack comes amid broader security discussions, as earlier this year, David Lloyd's chief executive, Russell Barnes, addressed concerns about "tagged" criminals using facilities. He emphasised that staff take swift action against inappropriate behaviour but noted that the club does not exclude members based on ankle tags alone, focusing instead on conduct.
Location and Community Impact
The David Lloyd club in Gosforth is situated opposite the Freeman Hospital and is a popular spot for high-profile individuals, including Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and legend Alan Shearer, who has used the pool for injury recovery. The attack has shocked the local community, with members expressing disbelief at the violence in such a public setting. As police continue their enquiries, the incident highlights ongoing challenges with targeted crime in upscale areas.
