Mother Accused of Murder Waves in Court After Baby's Tragic Fall
Zahira Byjaouane, 43, has appeared in court charged with the murder of her 18-day-old daughter, who fell to her death from a residential building in Westminster, Central London. During the minutes-long hearing, Byjaouane was not asked to enter a plea and spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth, and address. Judge John Zani deemed the case too serious for the magistrates' court, sending it to the Old Bailey, where she is due to appear on Wednesday, March 18. The judge stated, "This case has to be dealt with at the higher court and you will be appearing at the Central Criminal Court in two days' time." He added that bail did not arise due to the nature of the allegations, and she remains in custody.

Police officers attended the scene in Westminster on Saturday morning after reports that an infant had fallen from a height. The baby girl was pronounced dead in hospital. Forensic officers were seen along the street in the hours that followed, and floral tributes, including flowers and a toy animal, were left near the Peabody Estate building yesterday morning, where a police cordon had been lifted.

The Metropolitan Police's Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell said, "The death of an infant is always an extremely tragic occurrence, and officers are making urgent inquiries around the circumstances." She added that at this stage, they believe the incident occurred within a domestic context but are appealing for anybody with information to come forward to assist with the investigation.
