Norwich murder: Woman killed, man arrested

A woman has been killed in a residential street in Norwich, prompting a murder investigation and the arrest of a man in his 60s. Norfolk Police were called to the scene in Thorpe St Andrew late on Saturday night following reports of a woman injured in the street.

Emergency Response and Arrest

Emergency services rushed to Catherine Gardens in Thorpe St Andrew just before 11.45pm on Saturday, 17 January 2026. Despite their efforts, the woman, who was in her 40s, was declared dead at the scene.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, police arrested a man in his 60s on Dereham Road. He was taken into custody on suspicion of murder. Norfolk Police have indicated that they believe the victim and the suspect were known to each other.

Police Investigation Underway

Detective Superintendent Stacey Murray, who is leading the investigation, stated that they are in the early stages of establishing the sequence of events. "We are working to establish the sequence of events which led to the woman's death," she said.

Police have sealed off two locations as part of their inquiries. Yarmouth Road remains closed from its junction with Pound Lane to the junction with School Avenue while forensic examinations and other investigative work continue.

Det Supt Murray has made a direct appeal to the public for assistance. "We would urge anyone with information that could help the investigation, whether it concerns the incident itself or the events leading up to it, to get in touch," she urged.
