Parolee Accused of Fatal High-Speed Chase in Nashville

A convicted felon out on parole is facing serious charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle, leading police on a dangerous pursuit, and causing a fatal collision that claimed the life of a young woman near her Nashville home. The incident, described by authorities as a "horrible chain of events", has shocked the local community and raised questions about parole supervision.

Details of the Tragic Incident

Ray Eugene Padgett, 52, was on parole when he is accused of stealing a Ford F-250 truck from a car lot in North Nashville on the morning of March 20. According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, the truck's owner used a tracking device to locate the vehicle and followed it to an alley off St. Louis Street. Padgett allegedly reversed and rammed the owner's car before fleeing the scene, with charges related to that crash expected.

Police launched a helicopter and located Padgett on Murfreesboro Pike shortly afterward. Authorities intended to monitor the truck until it stopped and then apprehend him, but the situation escalated rapidly. Padgett is accused of ramming an unmarked police SUV with a plainclothes detective inside near the connector road between Murfreesboro Pike and Old Murfreesboro Pike, forcing the detective to flee on foot.

The Fatal Collision

Within minutes, Padgett allegedly sped the wrong way down Murfreesboro Pike at nearly 80 mph. At that moment, 23-year-old Oluwalayomi Fadero was turning off Murfreesboro Pike onto Hickory Woods Drive, just moments from reaching her house. Police report that Padgett's truck "violently struck" her Hyundai Elantra sedan on the driver's side, sending both vehicles approximately 100 yards into a ditch.

Fadero was pronounced dead at the scene. Padgett sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital before being released and arrested the following day. He is now being held at the Nashville Downtown Detention Center on an $805,000 bond.

Victim Remembered as Kind and Promising

Fadero, a recent graduate of Fisk University with a bachelor's degree in computer science and a minor in business administration, was remembered by loved ones as kind and full of light. She had been on track to complete her nursing degree in August 2026. According to a GoFundMe campaign, she was with her dog Nala at the time of the crash. Miraculously, Nala survived and was reunited with Fadero's family, but her loss has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew her.

Padgett's Criminal History and Charges

Police spokesperson Don Aaron stated that Padgett has at least 20 prior convictions across five Tennessee counties and was last arrested in Nashville in 2023 for a parole violation. "We believe he continues to be on parole and was on parole this morning when he stole the truck and set off the horrible, horrible chain of events that claimed the life of an innocent Nashville woman," Aaron said at a press conference.

Padgett faces multiple felony charges, including:

  • Criminally negligent homicide
  • Vehicular homicide by recklessness
  • Felony reckless endangerment
  • Attempted criminal homicide
  • Driving on a revoked license

Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues. The Independent has attempted to find legal representation for Padgett, but no contact has been confirmed at this time.

This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of reckless behavior and has prompted discussions about public safety and parolee monitoring in the Nashville area.
