A significant fire erupted in Plymouth during the early hours of Thursday morning, leading to the evacuation of a block of flats and causing extensive damage to a roof terrace.
Blaze on North Hill
The fire broke out just off North Hill, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky. Six fire engines were dispatched to the scene, with crews arriving from Totnes, Plympton, Camels Head, Greenbank, Crownhill, and Plymstock.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service reported that the fire started on a communal decking area of the roof terrace, which was completely destroyed. The cause has been deemed accidental.
Emergency Response
Upon arrival, firefighters found a large fire on the roof terrace and requested additional support. In total, six fire engines and a command support unit were deployed. Crews used four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, two safety jets, and two thermal image cameras to extinguish the blaze.
A spokesperson for the fire service stated: "Three fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were sent to a report of a fire in a block of flats. On arrival, crews confirmed a large fire on a roof terrace and requested further assistance. The fire was believed to have started accidentally on the communal decking area, which was totally destroyed."
No injuries have been reported, and residents were safely evacuated. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
