A major police investigation is underway in Greater Manchester after a person was left with serious injuries in a shooting on Thursday evening.
Major Police Response in Town Centre
Emergency services were called to Higher Road in Urmston at approximately 8:42pm on 16 January 2026 following reports of a firearms discharge. Witnesses reported a significant and rapid police presence, with at least ten marked vehicles racing to the scene.
Armed officers were deployed, and a large cordon was established, sealing off a section of the town centre. The police helicopter was also deployed to assist with the initial response, circling overhead.
Casualty Treated at the Scene
One casualty was treated by paramedics within the cordon for serious injuries. A witness described seeing what appeared to be a coat or jacket on the ground, with material from the padding scattered across the road, indicating where treatment was administered. An ambulance and a first response vehicle were visible inside the taped-off area.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the details, stating: "Emergency services have treated one casualty at the scene with serious injuries. A scene is in place and remains closed off to the public."
Ongoing Investigation and Patrols
The scene on Higher Road remains active and closed to the public as enquiries continue. Crime Scene Investigators have arrived to conduct forensic examinations. Police have confirmed that extra patrols have been deployed in the local area to provide reassurance to the community.
At least one armed officer was still stationed at the perimeter of the crime scene as the investigation progressed into the night. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
