Tragic Discovery in University Garden
A 21-year-old university student has been identified as the victim of a fatal stabbing in the garden of his shared home in Filton, near Bristol. Jamie Collins, who was studying at the University of the West of England Bristol (UWE Bristol), was found deceased in the early hours of Thursday after emergency services responded to a call at the property on Cleve Road.
Post-Mortem Reveals Multiple Stab Wounds
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed last week that a post-mortem examination determined Jamie died from "a number of stab wounds". The investigation has progressed rapidly, with authorities now confirming that his housemate, 23-year-old Zack Coughlan, has been charged with murder, as reported by Bristol Live.
Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Edgeworth, leading the case from the force's Major Crime Investigation Team, stated: "The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised a murder charge against Zack Coughlan." She explained that while formal identification is pending, Jamie's name is being released with his family's consent as it will become part of court proceedings and public record.
Housemate Charged and Remanded in Custody
Coughlan has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Bristol Magistrates' Court today, Tuesday, April 14. The swift legal action follows a thorough police investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jamie's death.
Det Ch Insp Edgeworth expressed profound sympathy, saying: "Our thoughts are with Jamie’s family at this hugely difficult time and specially-trained officers are offering them support and keeping them regularly updated with our investigation." She urged the public to respect the family's privacy during this tragic period.
Community and University Support Mobilised
The detective added that those who knew Jamie would be "understandably shocked and hugely saddened" by the news. In response, neighbourhood officers have increased high-visibility patrols in the Filton area over recent days.
Police are collaborating closely with staff at UWE Bristol, where both men were students, to ensure adequate support is available for affected individuals. "Further enquiries are planned in the area around Cleve Road over the coming days," Det Ch Insp Edgeworth confirmed, highlighting the ongoing nature of the investigation.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the university community and local residents, raising concerns about safety in student accommodations. The case continues to develop as legal proceedings commence against the accused.
