The tight-knit community of Inverness, Florida, is reeling from a devastating tragedy that claimed the lives of two teenage boys. George Watts and Derrick Hubbard, both aged 14, died after a deep hole they had been excavating by hand collapsed on top of them.
A Fatal Collapse in 'Sugar Sand'
The incident occurred last Saturday at Sportsman Park, located in Citrus County approximately 70 miles west of Orlando. According to officials from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, the two friends had been digging in an area characterised by loose 'sugar sand' for about two weeks. This type of sand, a remnant of Florida's ancient, higher sea levels, is notoriously unstable.
The boys were reportedly four to five feet down into the hole, likely using a shovel, when the walls suddenly gave way, burying them. Emergency services worked for around 30 minutes to extricate them from the sand. Despite the rapid response, Derrick Hubbard was pronounced dead at the scene. George Watts was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Community and Families in Mourning
In a heartbreaking update shared on Monday, George's mother, Jasmine Watts, revealed on Facebook that the family had made the agonising decision to take him off life support. She shared that her son would become an organ donor and that matches for his organs had already been found.
Jasmine Watts also helped establish a joint GoFundMe page to support both families with the sudden financial burdens. On the page, she paid tribute to the inseparable bond between the boys, describing them as "full of life, curiosity, and dreams for the future." She wrote, "In an instant, our world was shattered. What should have been another day of childhood adventure turned into a heartbreaking loss."
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office stated that the incident has "deeply affected students, neighbours, friends, and families across our county." Both boys were students at Inverness Middle School, which confirmed the tragedy and mobilised its crisis support team of counsellors and psychologists to help the grieving school community throughout the week.

This tragic event underscores the unforeseen dangers that can exist in everyday environments. The unstable nature of 'sugar sand', common in Florida, poses a significant but often overlooked risk for excavations of any depth.
