A disturbing video has revealed the moment a 65-year-old woman from Wimborne, Dorset, repeatedly struck her Shih Tzu-cross dog with a slipper after it had soiled its bed. Kay Holloway was captured on camera subjecting the animal, named Shuini, to a violent and sustained attack in her kitchen in July last year.
The Incident
In the footage, Holloway is seen entering the kitchen wearing black shorts before bending over the dog and delivering several hard kicks. She then picks up a slipper and strikes the whimpering animal approximately 20 times, while using abusive language. The video was shared with the RSPCA by a neighbour who had access to the recordings.
Veterinary Assessment
A vet who reviewed the footage told Poole Magistrates' Court that the beating was a 'systematic' attempt to inflict pain. The expert noted that the dog exhibited signs of psychological suffering, including whimpering, cowering, and avoidance behaviour. The vet also highlighted that Holloway's rough handling, such as yanking the dogs by their collars and slamming them against doors, would have caused physical pain and soft tissue injuries.
Court Proceedings
Holloway pleaded guilty to an animal welfare offence. The court heard that she was also pet-sitting a friend's dog, a crossbreed named Loki, at the time. Holloway expressed remorse but cited health issues and an inability to cope with caring for the additional dog. She was fined £1,415, ordered to pay £400 in costs, and a £566 victim surcharge. Additionally, she received a five-year ban from keeping dogs.
RSPCA Response
RSPCA Inspector Patrick Bailey condemned the abuse, stating, 'Dogs feel pain and suffering just like we do and always deserve to be shown kindness and compassion.' He emphasised that the behaviour was not an isolated incident but occurred repeatedly over two days. Shuini has since been rehomed by the charity.
