A massive evacuation operation is underway in a Plymouth suburb following the discovery of a suspected unexploded Second World War bomb at a construction site. The device was unearthed on Wednesday afternoon near an Aldi store on Clittaford Road in Southway, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Cordon and Evacuations
Devon and Cornwall Police have established a 400-metre cordon around the area, leading to the evacuation of approximately 1,200 homes. Residents have been urged to stay away until further notice, as the Royal Navy Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team assesses the ordnance. The duration of the cordon remains unclear.
Schools Affected
Oakwood Primary School and Little Acorns Pre-School, both situated within the cordon, will be closed on Thursday. Beechwood Primary School, although outside the immediate cordon, has been advised not to open as a precautionary measure due to the potential for the cordon to expand. The local council has apologised for the disruption but emphasised that safety is the top priority.

Plymouth City Council released a statement confirming the closures: "Due to the evolving situation in the Southway area, Oakwood Primary School and Little Acorns Pre-School will be closed tomorrow, as both settings are located within the 400-metre safety cordon. In addition, while Beechwood Primary School is not currently within the 400-metre cordon, it is close to the affected area. As a precaution, and to avoid potential disruption during the school day should the cordon be expanded further following assessment by military bomb disposal experts, the school has been advised not to open tomorrow."
