Sex Offender Dies in Prison Custody

Harold Wharton, a 75-year-old sex offender serving a 10-year prison sentence at HMP Northumberland, died of cancer on October 13, 2025. An inquest concluded on March 13 that he died of natural causes due to multi-organ failure caused by metastatic oesophageal cancer.

Sentenced in 2024

Wharton was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for sex offences in February 2024. He was incarcerated at the category C prison near Acklington in Northumberland at the time of his death.

Clinical Care Review

NHS England commissioned an independent clinical reviewer, supported by another independent clinical reviewer, to assess Wharton's clinical care at HMP Northumberland. The reviewer concluded that the care he received was equivalent to what he could have expected in the community. His medical records showed evidence of compassionate care by confident and competent staff. Wharton was monitored closely, appropriate management plans were implemented, and when his condition deteriorated, healthcare staff responded promptly and timely.
