The United Kingdom's terrorism threat level is expected to be raised in the wake of a double stabbing incident in Golders Green, according to reports. Officials are anticipated to announce later today that the threat from all forms of terrorism will escalate from 'substantial' to 'severe', indicating that an attack is now considered highly likely.
Decision by JTAC
The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) is expected to announce that it has decided to elevate the threat level following a series of attacks targeting the Jewish community in recent weeks. The most recent incident occurred yesterday in Golders Green, where two Jewish men were stabbed. Police used a Taser to subdue the knifeman, and both victims are now in a stable condition.
Historical Context
The threat level was last assessed as severe in November 2021 after the Liverpool Women's Hospital bombing, where a failed asylum seeker detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and injuring a taxi driver. In February 2022, independent JTAC experts lowered the threat level to 'substantial', meaning an attack was likely. The threat level has remained unchanged for the past four years, despite several terrorist incidents.
