Haitian Town Engulfed in Gang and Vigilante Violence, Dozens Feared Dead
Haiti Town Descends into Fire and Bloodshed from Gang Warfare

Violence has erupted in the central Haitian town of Petite-Rivière de l'Artibonite, descending into fire and bloodshed as a powerful gang warred with a local vigilante group, regional officials confirmed to The Associated Press early Sunday morning.

Streets Littered with Bodies as Gang Rampage Continues

The rampage from the gang known as Gran Grif left bloodied bodies scattered across the streets of the Jean-Denis neighborhood, according to videos obtained by news agencies. Gangs set fire to multiple houses, leaving civilians reeling from the sudden outbreak of violence in their community.

It was not immediately clear how many people were slain by the gang during the attack, though witnesses described scenes of carnage throughout the town. The massacre represents just the latest bloodshed in a nation that has been left reeling by spiraling gang warfare for five years following the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

Vigilante Groups Emerge Amidst Chaos

Around 2023, vigilante groups began to emerge in the Caribbean nation to strike back against gangs that have been sucking the life from Haiti. This wave of brutal vigilante justice has made the conflict in Haiti even more complicated at the same time as international forces have sought to pacify the country.

Vigilante groups often close off neighborhoods, stone and chop off the limbs of suspected gangsters, behead them and set them afire, sometimes while they are still alive. These extreme measures have created a cycle of violence that shows no signs of abating.

Gran Grif Gang Designated as Terrorist Organization

Meanwhile, the Gran Grif gang continues to sow terror in the Artibonite region of Haiti, where Petite-Rivière de l'Artibonite is located. The Gran Grif gang was among a number of Haitian gangs to be designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the Trump administration last year, highlighting the severity of their activities.

According to the United Nations, Gran Grif is the largest gang in the region, responsible for approximately 80% of civilian deaths there. The organization has documented how the gang has massacred and raped civilians, including minors, forced thousands of people to flee their homes, and dismembered people in brutal attacks.

The conflict between established gangs like Gran Grif and emerging vigilante groups has created a deadly power struggle that continues to claim innocent lives and displace communities throughout Haiti. As international efforts to stabilize the country continue, residents of towns like Petite-Rivière de l'Artibonite face daily threats from multiple armed factions vying for control.
