He passed away on Sunday in Ireland, where he had resided since the death of his wife, Ramona, in 2018. A Life Dedicated to Zoology and Public Engagement
Born in Purton, Wiltshire, in 1928, Desmond Morris cultivated a profound interest in natural history from his earliest years. After completing two years of national service in the British Army starting in 1946, he pursued his academic passions, graduating with a zoology degree from the University of Birmingham. He later earned a doctorate in animal behaviour from the University of Oxford, where he conducted significant research on the reproductive behaviour of birds.
Morris's career took a public turn when he became the head of the Granada TV and Film Unit for the Zoological Society of London. He hosted the beloved television programme Zoo Time until 1959, scripting and presenting approximately 500 episodes that captivated audiences across the nation.
International Acclaim with 'The Naked Ape'
In 1967, Desmond Morris achieved international fame with the publication of his groundbreaking book, The Naked Ape: A Zoologist's Study of the Human Animal. This work became a global bestseller, establishing him as a leading figure in popular science. He further expanded his television presence by presenting the BBC Two series Life in the Animal World, educating viewers on diverse species and behaviours.
