The entertainment world is in mourning following the tragic death of BBC actor Finnian Garbutt, who has passed away at the age of 28 after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. Garbutt was best known for his role as PC Ryan Power in the popular crime drama series Hope Street, a part that endeared him to audiences across the UK and beyond.
A Peaceful Passing at Home
Finnian Garbutt died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, as he had wished. His family released a heartfelt statement expressing their gratitude for the outpouring of support during this incredibly difficult time. They said, "He passed peacefully at home, as he wished, surrounded by his family. We want to thank everyone for their support, their kind words, and for being with us during this really difficult time."
The family also extended thanks to those who contributed to a GoFundMe page set up to support Garbutt's wife, Louise, and their daughter, Saoirse, following his death. "Thank you also to everyone who donated to our GoFundMe page. The peace of mind you all gave Finn during his last days made his passing so much easier to bear," they added.
Diagnosis and Brave Battle
Garbutt was diagnosed with Stage Three skin cancer four years ago, after his barber discovered a lump behind his ear that was initially mistaken for an ingrown hair. He underwent surgery in 2022 to remove the cancer, but sadly, the disease spread to his neck and other parts of his body.
In a heartbreaking update shared on his Instagram at the beginning of March, Garbutt revealed that scans showed the cancer had progressed rapidly, and he was entering the final stages of his life. He wrote, "Unfortunately the scans have shown that the cancer has progressed rapidly in my body and I am now entering the last stages of my life." He expressed his desire to spend quality time with family and friends, stating, "I hope now it's in the open then I can enjoy the time with my amazing family and friends."
A Life of Achievements
Despite his illness, Finnian Garbutt reflected on achieving many of his life goals over the past four years. He noted, "I've achieved so many of my life goals – 30 episodes in a TV show, being the lead in a movie (that should be out soon), buying my own house, marrying my best friend and becoming a father to the most incredible baby girl who never fails to make me smile."
He ended his statement with a message of gratitude, thanking supporters and inviting connections for social gatherings, saying, "If anyone wants to meet up for a pint, coffee or general bit of craic please reach out and we can try and make it work."
Outpouring of Support
The GoFundMe page set up for Garbutt's family saw an overwhelming response, with donations and tributes flooding in from fans and well-wishers. One supporter commented, "I'm heartbroken for this brave young man and his beautiful little family. I hope my donation helps to give him some peace knowing that his family will be taken care of." Another added, "You are some man. Love to you and your beautiful family."
In his final weeks, Garbutt received support from a hospice, as he shared on his Instagram story on March 25, "A day in bed supplied by @nihospice. Thank you that have supported me and my family. I will no longer be sharing my GoFundMe page, but it is still active in bio. Love you all folks."
Family's Request for Privacy
The family has announced that details of Finnian Garbutt's funeral will be shared soon, but they have requested privacy during this challenging period. Their statement concluded, "We will soon be announcing details of his funeral. In the meantime, we ask that our family’s privacy be respected at this really difficult time. Thank you so much, and with all the love in the world, Louise, Luke & the family xxx."
Finnian Garbutt leaves behind his wife, Louise, and their daughter, Saoirse. His legacy as a talented actor and a courageous individual will be remembered by all who knew him and followed his career.
