Justin Bieber's Coachella Headline Performance Sparks Fan Backlash Over Livestream Focus
The much-anticipated return of Justin Bieber to the stage at Coachella, dubbed 'Bieberchella' by excited fans, has left many attendees underwhelmed and critical of the star's unconventional approach. The Canadian singer's headline set at the California festival featured a stripped-back performance where he wore a hoodie and surfed YouTube for old hits, leading to debate about his staging and emphasis on new music.
Fan Criticism of Performance Priorities
British influencer and self-confessed Belieber Jack Remmington, who attended the festival, has spoken out about the disappointing experience. He criticised Bieber's apparent focus on the at-home audience watching via livestream rather than the live crowd who purchased tickets. "My main takeaway is not even a Bieber thing, it's more indicative of the industry nowadays," Remmington told his Instagram followers. "Festival performers are increasingly not prioritising the live audience who have bought tickets to see the artist."
Remmington reported seeing fans leaving the show in significant numbers, contradicting positive online reactions. "I'm telling you in the audience, people were leaving in their droves, it did not translate," he continued. "The camera work, and the performance felt very much catered to people at home which is not what you buy tickets for the live experience to experience."
Unconventional Staging and Audience Reaction
Bieber's performance featured him sitting on a stool with a laptop, pulling up old videos and checking the livestream to determine which tracks fans wanted to hear. He then sang along to brief snippets of beloved songs like Baby, Favorite Girl, and Never Say Never, a move that divided audience members. The opening segment included eleven songs from his 2025 Swag and Swag II albums, with Bieber making a low-key entrance onto an empty stage in a pink hoodie.
Social media reactions from attendees echoed Remmington's concerns, with one tweet stating: "I kid you not thousands of people are leaving Justin's set because it's so boring." Another comment highlighted perceived double standards: "Women are demanded to deliver production, choreography etc... but men get applause for the bare minimum."
Comparison to Other Performers and Context
Remmington contrasted Bieber's performance with high-energy sets from other artists, referencing Sabrina Carpenter's Friday night headline slot and Beyoncé's seminal 2019 Coachella show. He described Justin's performance as feeling "unrehearsed and sloppy," despite acknowledging the singer's musical evolution. "I just have a certain level of expectation with regard to performer, excellence, charisma and for me it just wasn't there," he explained.
This marked Bieber's debut as a top-billed performer at Coachella, for which he was reportedly paid $10 million. He has previously appeared four times as a surprise guest artist supporting other performers. The performance represented his first full-length live set in nearly four years, following brief appearances at the Grammys and a Super Bowl event earlier in 2026.
Mixed Reactions and Future Performances
Not all feedback was negative. Vogue's Christian Allaire praised the middle segment where Bieber performed a medley of old hits, describing it as "cheeky and unserious" and noting that it "gave the fans what they wanted." Allaire appreciated the nostalgic connection to how original Beliebers first experienced Bieber through low-quality YouTube videos.
Bieber is scheduled to headline again during Coachella's second weekend, but has indicated he plans to maintain his current work level and prioritise family life with his wife Hailey and son Jack. He admitted last year that the prospect of touring again felt "super daunting," but told fans on Twitch: "I'm putting on a hell of a show for you guys for Coachella, getting ready, and getting inspired."
The performance followed a private, invite-only warm-up concert at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles approximately a week before Coachella, marking the beginning of what many hope will be a significant comeback for the singer after his music hiatus following the cancellation of his 2022 world tour.
