Demi Moore has shared rare and heartwarming photographs of her ex-husband Bruce Willis bonding with his young granddaughter, marking the Hollywood icon's 71st birthday. The 63-year-old actress, who recently attended the Vanity Fair Oscars party, took to her primary Instagram account on Thursday to post a touching tribute to the Die Hard star as he celebrated another year.
Family Celebrations Amid Health Challenges
The emotional birthday celebration comes three years after Willis's family publicly announced his diagnosis with frontotemporal dementia, a progressive neurological condition. In the images shared by Moore, Willis can be seen holding his nearly three-year-old granddaughter Louetta, who gently places a kiss on his cheek. Another photograph captures the tender moment when Louetta wraps her arms around her grandfather's neck, while Willis maintains a gentle smile.
A Blended Family's Support
Moore and Willis were married for thirteen years before their divorce in 2000, and together they share three daughters: Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 32. Their eldest daughter Rumer welcomed Louetta in April 2023 with her then-partner Derek Richard Thomas. In her Instagram caption, Moore wrote simply: 'All you need is LOVE. Happy birthday, BW! ♥️' She also shared additional images to her Instagram Stories with the message: 'Generational birthday love! Happy birthday, BW!'
Rumer Willis also celebrated her father's birthday on social media, posting a compilation video showcasing his various film roles throughout his distinguished career. She accompanied the tribute with heartfelt words: 'Happy Birthday Daddio. I wanted to think about you today. Dancing around, being your undeniably charming self. I love you so much.'
Current Wife's Emotional Tribute
Following his divorce from Moore, Bruce Willis married model Emma Heming in 2009, and together they have two daughters: Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11. Heming marked the birthday occasion by sharing a photograph of Willis smiling broadly while relaxing near water during a scenic getaway. She penned an emotional message alongside the image: 'Today we celebrate Bruce's birthday. This journey with frontotemporal dementia has opened my eyes to the realities so many families face.'
Charitable Initiatives and Caregiving
Heming explained that her husband's condition inspired her to recently establish The Emma & Bruce Willis Fund, dedicated to raising awareness about frontotemporal dementia, supporting research efforts, and assisting caregivers who shoulder significant daily responsibilities. She encouraged supporters to contribute to the fund or other organizations working in this field, or simply to check in on caregivers, noting that small acts of kindness can have profound meaning.
Last week, Heming officially launched the charity during her acceptance of the Susan Newhouse & Si Newhouse Award of Hope at The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration's Hope Rising Benefit in New York City. Speaking at the event, she expressed: 'This journey has opened my eyes to the realities so many families face when a loved one is living with frontotemporal dementia. I believe deeply in the importance of supporting research while also showing up for the caregivers who carry so much every day.'
Living Arrangements and Daily Life
Bruce Willis retired from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, which later progressed to frontotemporal dementia. In August of last year, it was revealed that the Pulp Fiction star now resides in a separate home just down the street from the family's primary residence, where he receives round-the-clock care.
During a January appearance on the Conversations With Cam podcast, Heming shared that she visits her husband frequently, describing the care facility as their 'second home' where they continue to create memories together. The family maintains regular contact, with Heming and their children having dinner with Willis several times each week, and Heming often joining him for breakfast.
Understanding the Condition
Heming revealed during the podcast interview that Willis remains unaware of his dementia diagnosis, a phenomenon known as anosognosia where the brain cannot recognize its own condition. She explained: 'Bruce never, never tapped in. I think that's like the blessing and the curse of this, is that he never connected the dots that he had this disease, and I'm really happy about that. People think this might be denial, but actually, this is the anosognosia that comes into play. It's not denial. It's just that their brain is changing. This is a part of the disease.'
The blended family's united support for Willis during his health challenges demonstrates their enduring bonds and commitment to his wellbeing, even as they navigate the complexities of frontotemporal dementia together.
