Another Buffy alum, Emma Caulfield, who played Brendon's love interest Anya on the series, also expressed her grief through social media. The 52-year-old actress posted on her Instagram Stories, writing, "My heart is heavy. I can't put into words just yet how this has hit me. Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you," according to reports from Page Six. This tribute has since been deleted from her account.

Family Statement and Artistic Legacy

Brendon's family shared their official announcement on social media, accompanied by a group photo featuring four family members posing with the actor. "We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes," the statement read.

The family's tribute highlighted Brendon's multifaceted talents beyond his acting career. "Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years," the post explained. "In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans."

They described him as "passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create," adding that "those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was." The family requested privacy as they grieve and celebrate "the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination and heart."

Health Challenges and Career Highlights

Nicholas Brendon was best known for his role as Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran from 1997 to 2003. He later portrayed Kevin Lynch in the crime drama Criminal Minds. According to The Hollywood Reporter, his family noted in an earlier version of their statement that Brendon had been undergoing treatment at the time of his passing.

"While it's no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing," the family previously wrote.

The actor faced several health challenges in recent years. In 2023, he revealed he had suffered a heart attack and was subsequently diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. Brendon had also been open about his battles with addiction, which he acknowledged played a role in his health issues, including cauda equina syndrome.

This condition, which involves compression of nerve roots at the bottom of the spinal cord, required him to undergo multiple corrective spinal surgeries over the years. Additionally, Brendon underwent knee surgery in late 2025, according to a Facebook post from November of that year.

The family's final statement emphasized Brendon's creative spirit and the impact he had on those who knew him personally and through his work. As tributes continue to pour in from fans and colleagues, the legacy of Nicholas Brendon as both an actor and artist remains firmly established in popular culture.
