Music icon Cher was reportedly rendered speechless after discovering she has a 15-year-old granddaughter, ending years of family rumours that her son Elijah Allman had fathered a secret child. The revelation came during an emotional phone call last year with Kayti Edwards, the mother of the granddaughter, who confirmed the long-suspected relation.
The Family Secret Unveiled
Former model Kayti Edwards, who is also the granddaughter of actress Julie Andrews, has claimed she had a brief relationship with Cher's son Elijah Allman, 49, in 2010. This liaison resulted in the birth of a daughter named Ever. According to Kayti, Elijah was aware of Ever's existence and would make quiet visits every few years, but he explicitly "did not want to be a parent."
The secret remained largely hidden until 2021, when Elijah suffered a drug overdose and confessed to his now-estranged wife, Marieangela King, that he had a child. This confession set off a chain of whispers within the family, eventually reaching Cher herself.
Cher's Emotional Reaction
Last year, Cher reportedly contacted Kayti directly to inquire about the rumours. Kayti recounted to The Sun that Cher said she had heard something from Elijah back in 2021 but was uncertain if it was "just crazy talk." Upon confirmation, Cher was left utterly speechless. Kayti described the moment, stating, "When she heard the news, she was speechless. Cher told her family, 'Oh my God, I'm finally a grandma.'"
This personal revelation comes at a tumultuous time for the singer, as she is concurrently grappling with her son's escalating crises.
Conservatorship and Elijah's Deteriorating Situation
Just one day prior to the granddaughter story emerging, Cher filed a request with the court to appoint a temporary conservator for Elijah, citing a series of severe financial, legal, and drug-related issues. In court documents obtained by the Daily Mail, Cher revealed that Elijah is currently confined in a psychiatric hospital, with his life having "significantly deteriorated" since she first sought conservatorship in 2023.
Alarming Incidents and Financial Woes
Cher detailed a harrowing incident where Elijah was found unconscious behind the wheel of his car, causing a traffic jam, and required hospitalisation with Narcan administered to save his life. She expressed deep concern over his financial management, asserting that he "has no concept of money, is unable to manage his financial resources and is unable to withstand fraud or undue influence."
Elijah's financial troubles are substantial. He owes $18,000 to a drug dealer, borrowed money from a friend to avoid further harm, and faces a mounting $200,000 tax bill. Additionally, he has accumulated significant debt from damaging various Airbnbs, including incidents of cigarette burns and broken windows. Cher claims he owes $50,000 from his last Airbnb stay after reportedly trashing the property.
Legal and Behavioural Issues
Elijah's behaviour has led to him being banned from 18 hotels for disturbing guests, screaming obscenities, and acting erratically. In one particularly disturbing incident, he allegedly cornered a young female maid at a hotel and "aggressively proposed sexual relations."
Recent legal troubles include multiple arrests in New Hampshire for charges such as felony burglary, criminal mischief, simple assault, criminal trespass, and breach of bail.
Cher's Plea for Intervention
In her court filing, Cher is requesting that judge appoint fiduciary Jason Rubin as the temporary conservator of Elijah's estate. She stresses that her son's situation has become dire, with his mental health having "severely deteriorated" and his drug dependency at its worst. Cher hopes that with Rubin overseeing Elijah's affairs, his myriad issues "can start being fixed one problem at a time."
The juxtaposition of Cher's joyful discovery of a granddaughter with the grim reality of her son's struggles paints a complex picture of family dynamics under intense public scrutiny.
