Chrissy Teigen Celebrates 52 Days of Sobriety After Relapse

Chrissy Teigen is marking a significant milestone with 52 days of sobriety, following a period where alcohol gradually re-entered her life after an initial five-year abstinence. The 40-year-old television personality originally gave up drinking in December 2020 but acknowledges that she slipped back into regular drinking patterns late last year.

Inspiration from Carl Radke's Journey

Teigen now attributes her renewed commitment to sobriety to Summer House star Carl Radke, who shared his own sobriety story on her Self-Conscious podcast. In a detailed Instagram post, she expressed her gratitude, writing: 'I am grateful to @carlradke. Not for just all the years on Bravo he has blessed us with, but because of his honesty and openness around his own journey with sobriety.'

She reflected on her personal struggles, noting: 'After being sober for a little over a year, I went back to drinking. I promised myself it would be in a “mindful” way.' Teigen explained that she initially wanted to enjoy occasional drinks, such as a glass of wine on date nights or toasts at celebrations, but this mindset led to familiar patterns of excessive consumption.

The Slippery Slope Back to Drinking

Describing the progression, Teigen shared: 'Quiet moments at home were for wine. The time went from 6pm, to 5, to 4, to aw hell, it’s lunch, why not. When it got to 11am, I was like, oh f***, here we go again.' She emphasised that her drinking was not overtly chaotic but was consistent and detrimental to her well-being, leaving her feeling unwell and limiting her daily activities.

As a mother of four children with husband John Legend, Teigen faced additional pressures, including a new job opportunity on Star Search. She stated: 'Within the same week of talking to Carl, I stopped drinking again. I had been in talks for Star Search and knew that if I were given the incredible chance to be on the show, there was absolutely no f****** way I’d do it with alcohol in my dressing room.'

A Different Approach to Sobriety This Time

Teigen highlighted that her current sobriety journey feels distinct from her first attempt. She remarked: 'I think the biggest difference between now and the first time is that there’s no pomp around it. The first time I put my foot down, it was EXCITING. The momentum was fun and kept me going on the right track.'

She pondered the challenges of maintaining support during a relapse, comparing it to rekindling a relationship that others might view with scepticism. Despite these hurdles, Teigen is firm in her resolve, declaring: 'Anyhow, this is long! But I’m 52 days sober again with no desire to turn back.'

Life Without Alcohol: Resilience and Humour

Concluding her post, Teigen affirmed her ability to thrive without alcohol, saying: 'Turns out, without it, I can still be funny. Still be stupid. Still be wildly nervous. Anxious as a mother f*****. And I can get through it all without it.' She thanked her followers for their support and encouraged them to listen to her podcast conversation with Radke, which she credits as life-changing.
