David Hockney's Private Funeral Held with Only Partner and Great-Nephew
David Hockney's Private Funeral with Two Attendees

David Hockney's funeral has taken place privately with just two attendees: his partner Jean-Pierre Goncalves de Lima and great-nephew Richard, his publicist confirmed. The artist, known for works like The Splash and Portrait Of An Artist (Pool With Two Figures), died peacefully at his home aged 88 on June 11.

Details of the Funeral

Publicist Erica Bolton stated: "We have been overwhelmed by your tributes... it was David's clear wish that his funeral should be attended only by his partner, JP, and his great-nephew Richard; and that their privacy would be respected." The funeral has already taken place.

Upcoming Memorial Services

According to Hockney's wishes, the first memorial service will be held in London in spring 2027, followed by services in Yorkshire, Paris, and Los Angeles. Bolton added that most of Hockney's works will be given to foundations and public institutions worldwide to further his legacy.

Hockney's Legacy

Hockney did not own a collection of other artists' works, and none of his own work was stored at his properties in the UK, France, or the US. He was celebrated for embracing digital art and iPads alongside traditional painting.

Career Highlights

Hockney trained at the Bradford School of Art in the 1950s and graduated with gold medal distinction from the Royal College of Art in London in 1962. He emerged as a seminal talent in the new generation of British artists. In 2017, he was invited to produce the stained-glass Queen's Window for Westminster Abbey, unveiled in October 2018 in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. He was appointed to the Order of the Companions of Honour in 1997 and the Order of Merit in 2012. In 2026, he became one of the few non-French citizens awarded the rank of officer in France's Legion d'Honneur.
