Game of Thrones and Blue Lights Actor Michael Patrick Dies at 35 Following Motor Neurone Disease Diagnosis
The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Michael Patrick, a talented actor from Belfast who has died at the age of 35 after a courageous battle with motor neurone disease. Patrick, who was diagnosed with the illness in February 2023, passed away peacefully on Tuesday at the Northern Ireland Hospice, where he had been admitted just ten days earlier.
A Life Celebrated by Family and Friends
His death was announced by his devoted wife, Naomi, who shared the heartbreaking news on social media. 'Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are,' she wrote. 'It's been said more than once that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life.'
Naomi described her husband as living 'a life as full as any human can live', filled with joy, an abundance of spirit, and infectious laughter. She fondly referred to him as 'a titan of a ginger haired man' and expressed profound gratitude for the support they received throughout his illness.
A Distinguished Acting Career
Michael Patrick trained at the prestigious Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London after first studying science at the University of Cambridge. His acting portfolio included notable roles in:
- Game of Thrones
- Blue Lights
- Soft Border Patrol
- My Left Nut
He was particularly acclaimed for his theatre work, including a remarkable performance as Richard III in a wheelchair that earned him the Judges' Award at the Stage Awards in January 2025.
Continuing to Create Despite Illness
Remarkably, Patrick continued his acting career following his diagnosis, finding that performing and writing provided a vital focus away from his illness and helped him maintain a positive outlook. His resilience and advocacy were recognized with the Overcoming Adversity Award at the Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards in 2025.
The Lyric Theatre Belfast, where Patrick regularly performed, paid heartfelt tribute to the actor. Executive producer Jimmy Fay wrote: 'Mick showed great strength and dignity in light of his diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). He remained resilient and focused, creating dynamic work throughout his struggles. He performed on the Lyric stage just last November with his autobiographical My Right Foot.'
Fay continued: 'We at the Lyric pay tribute to his remarkable talent and send our deepest condolences to his wife Naomi, his mother and sisters, and all his friends, family and colleagues at this sad time. These islands have lost a great artist, and the sky is brighter tonight with his star.'
Understanding Motor Neurone Disease
Motor neurone disease remains a condition that is not fully understood by medical science, with no current treatments available to halt its progression. Doctors instead focus on managing and alleviating the most severe symptoms.
Key facts about MND include:
- Approximately 5,000 adults in the UK live with the condition
- There is a one in 300 lifetime risk of developing MND
- The disease causes progressive muscle weakness over months or years
Early symptoms typically involve stiff or weak hands, weakened legs and feet (often causing frequent tripping), and muscle twitches, spasms or cramps. As the disease advances, sufferers may experience:
- Breathing difficulties
- Swallowing problems
- Speech impairment
- Eventually, complete loss of mobility
Tragically, life expectancy for about half of those diagnosed is between just two and five years from symptom onset, with symptoms often worsening rapidly.
A Lasting Legacy
Michael Patrick is survived by his wife Naomi, his mother Pauline, siblings Kate, Maurice and Hannah, and his nephew Michael. His legacy as an actor who continued to create meaningful work despite immense personal challenges will inspire both the entertainment community and those facing similar health battles for years to come.
