Greer Grammer Speaks Candidly About Estranged Relationship With Famous Father
Greer Grammer, the 33-year-old actress and former Miss Teen Malibu, has opened up about her complicated childhood relationship with her father, legendary Hollywood comedian Kelsey Grammer. Despite her father's iconic status from starring in hit shows like Cheers and Frasier, Greer reveals they were largely estranged during her formative years.
A Hollywood Legacy With Personal Distance
The actress, who recently dazzled in black at the opening of the Brilliant Earth jewelry store in Beverly Hills, has been carving her own path in Hollywood with roles in MTV's Awkward, The Goldbergs, and Netflix's Deadly Illusions. She also appeared alongside her father in Season 2 of the Frasier revival, playing Alice, the adult daughter of Frasier's former radio sidekick Roz Doyle.
However, Greer insists her acting resume has nothing to do with family connections. "The biggest misconception about me, and I never know how to talk about it except to just trauma dump, is that I didn't know my dad until I was 16," she explained during a recent appearance on the Pretty Basic podcast.
Childhood Separation and Accidental Reunion
Kelsey Grammer, now 70, and Greer's mother, stylist Barrie Buckner, separated shortly after Greer's birth. "My dad left when I was 4, and then I didn't meet him again until I was 16," Greer revealed. "Technically, I saw him once when I was 11, and I ran. It was in a Blockbuster. I ran away."
The real reunion came unexpectedly a decade later. "When I was 16, I ran into him at a Christmas tree lot," she recalled. "And he came up to me and said, 'Are you Greer?' And I said, 'Yes, I am.' And then he went, 'I'm – .' And I was like, 'I know who you are. Duh.'"
Kelsey handed her his phone number, and within a week they were having lunch – the beginning of a long-overdue reconnection.
Fleeting Memories and Ongoing Healing
Greer does have some early memories of her father before their separation. She remembers attending a Frasier taping and her preschool production of The Wizard of Oz, which they've since discussed. "Those are all very specific," she said of the memories. "I can see them when I think about them, but after that, I don't know."
Even now, she's working through the emotional impact of their estrangement in therapy. "Of course, my therapist was like, 'Do you remember when you knew that your dad wasn't a part of your life anymore? Did your mom ever sit you down?'" Grammer shared. "And I was like, 'I don't think so.' She was like, 'You should ask her about that.' I was like, 'No. I think my brain's probably blocking it out for a reason.'"
Family Connections and Recent Developments
There's also a familial link to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, as Kelsey was previously married to Camille Grammer from the Bravo series. Since reuniting, father and daughter have been seen together on numerous occasions, rebuilding their relationship.
Meanwhile, Kelsey Grammer recently welcomed his eighth child this year with his fourth wife, Kayte Walsh, 46. The couple, married for 14 years, already share three children. Grammer first met the British beauty in 2009 while she was working as a flight attendant on one of his London flights.
Kelsey's fatherhood journey began in 1983 with daughter Spencer from his first marriage, and he later had two more children with third wife Camille Meyer during their 13-year marriage.
Despite the challenges of her childhood, Greer Grammer continues to establish herself as an actress in her own right while navigating the complexities of her famous family connections.
