Hope Street Actor Finnian Garbutt Dies at 28 After Terminal Cancer Battle
Finnian Garbutt, the talented actor best known for his role in the Northern Irish police drama Hope Street, has died at the age of 28. His passing comes just days after he publicly shared his terminal cancer diagnosis in a series of heartbreaking social media posts.
Peaceful Passing at Home
The actor's family announced the news on Instagram on Friday, revealing that Finnian had been able to return home for his final moments. Their statement read: 'He passed peacefully at home, as he wished, surrounded by his family. We want to thank everyone for their support, their kind words, and for being with us during this really difficult time.'
The family also expressed gratitude to those who donated to their GoFundMe page, noting that 'The peace of mind you all gave Finn during his last days made his passing so much easier to bear.'
Rising Star Cut Short
Garbutt had joined the cast of Hope Street in 2023, playing new police constable Ryan Power in the popular BBC drama. His career was showing tremendous promise, with additional roles in the film Housejackers and an episode of Casualty in 2020.
Despite his professional success, the actor faced a devastating health battle that began five years ago with an initial skin cancer diagnosis. In February, he revealed that the cancer had progressed rapidly and become terminal.
Heartbreaking Diagnosis Journey
The timeline of Garbutt's illness reveals a particularly cruel sequence of events:
- Initial diagnosis of stage three malignant melanoma five years ago
- Surgery to remove cancer in 2022
- Diagnosis with Stage IV melanoma in August 2024, just two weeks before the birth of his daughter Saoirse
- Announcement in February that the cancer had become terminal
- Move to hospice care in late March
In his final social media posts, Garbutt shared that he was entering 'the last stages of his life' and focused on spending quality time with his 'amazing family and friends.'
Personal Milestones Amidst Illness
Remarkably, Garbutt achieved significant personal milestones during his four-year battle with cancer. He reflected in February: 'Since being diagnosed four years ago, I have achieved so many of my life goals – 30 episodes in a TV show, being the lead in a movie, buying my own house, marrying my best friend and becoming a father to the most incredible baby girl.'
The actor married his wife Louise Agnew and welcomed their daughter Saoirse in August 2024, creating precious family memories during his final months.
Advocacy and Awareness
Throughout his illness, Garbutt became a passionate advocate for cancer awareness. After his initial diagnosis, he urged people to get checked, stating: 'What I want now is to get as many people to know about this disease... if caught early, it is very very treatable.'
He emphasized the importance of skin checks and sun safety, noting that he himself had never used sunbeds and didn't particularly enjoy sunbathing, yet still developed advanced melanoma.
In his final public messages, Garbutt maintained a remarkable spirit, writing in December: '4 years today I was diagnosed with cancer. It's been a mad journey so far... Here's to many more happy years.'
The entertainment industry has lost a promising young talent, while the cancer awareness community has gained a powerful voice whose legacy will continue through the awareness he raised about melanoma detection and prevention.
