Jane McDonald's Emotional Journey: Grief, New Beginnings, and Career Success
Wakefield-born cruise ship singer Jane McDonald is navigating a period of profound personal change while maintaining a bustling professional schedule. The vocalist, known for her powerful performances, has recently been candid about the emotional challenges she has faced following the loss of her fiancé, Eddie Rothe, in 2021.
Heartbreak and Healing After Eddie Rothe's Death
Jane McDonald's world was shattered when her longtime fiancé, Eddie Rothe, succumbed to lung cancer three years ago. The pandemic restrictions at the time meant his funeral was a low-key affair, which Jane has described as a tragedy because friends and family could not properly gather to pay their respects. To cope with her grief, Jane admits to listening to old voicemails from Eddie and wearing his favourite jumper to feel a sense of closeness to him.
This profound loss has directly influenced her latest creative work. Her eleventh studio album, Living The Dream, features songs inspired by Eddie, including the track How Can I Move On?, which references those voicemails and the comfort of his clothing. Another song, Beautiful Soul, is a tribute she finds emotionally challenging to perform but sees as a channel for others mourning their loved ones.
Selling the £1 Million Wakefield Home
In a significant lifestyle change, Jane made the difficult decision to sell her five-bedroom property, Cleevethorpe House, in Wakefield earlier this year. Despite having invested considerable time and effort into renovating the £1 million home, she found the memories associated with it too overwhelming. I found it difficult. There was too much history there, she explained. Jane now resides in a smaller property in the same area, sharing it with her close friend Sue Ravey, whom she met in her twenties.
The downsizing process was an emotional purge, requiring seven skips to clear out accumulated belongings. With Sue's encouragement, Jane learned to photograph sentimental items before letting them go, embracing a simpler, more peaceful living environment.
Reflections on Marriage to Henrik Brixen
Jane has also spoken openly about her previous marriage to Dutch ship plumbing engineer Henrik Brixen, which ended in divorce in 2003 after five years. She revealed that she was never truly in love with Henrik, describing their split as the best thing he ever did. During their marriage, Henrik served as her manager, but Jane felt he struggled to navigate the complexities of the music industry.
He didn't understand that it's all a game, our business, and you have to play it, she remarked, noting the industry's initial skepticism toward her cruise ship background. Despite the challenges, Jane credits this period with teaching her to be self-reliant, eventually managing her career independently after being dropped by record labels.
Current Projects and Future Plans
Professionally, Jane remains as busy as ever. She recently fronted the Channel 5 travel series From Pole to Pole and documented the recording of her new album at Blackbird Studio in Nashville. Looking ahead, she is set to embark on an arena tour starting in August, promising shows that blend emotional depth with disco energy. It's like therapy - and that's just for me! she quipped about her performances.
Through it all, Jane McDonald continues to demonstrate resilience, using her art to process grief and connect with audiences, all while building a new chapter in her personal life.
