Joel Madden Reveals Daughter's Name Change to Kate

Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden has publicly addressed his daughter's identity for the first time, following the teenager's revelation of her new name and appearance on her 18th birthday. The musician, 47, shares daughter Kate, formerly known as Harlow, and son Sparrow, 16, with his wife, reality star Nicole Richie, 44.

Long-Standing Personal Choice

During an appearance on the Dumb Blonde podcast hosted by BunnieXO, Madden clarified that his eldest child has been using her middle name Kate since approximately first grade. He recounted discovering this choice during a school open house, where a teacher referred to his daughter as Kate.

"She's been going by her middle name since she was in like, first grade," Madden explained. "She chose it. She went to school, one day she came home, or we went to the open house night or whatever, and the teacher's like, 'Kate's doing great. She's so nice.'"

The musician described the family's reaction to learning about the name preference. "And we're like, 'Who's Kate?' And they're like, 'Your daughter Kate. That's what she said her name was.' We're like, 'Oh, she's going by her middle name now?' And we went home, and we're like, 'You go by Kate at school?' And she goes, 'Yeah, I like it.'"

No Major Family Discussion

Madden emphasized that the name change was not a significant issue within the family. "It wasn't a big deal. I thought it was cool. And there was no discussion. It wasn't a big deal," he stated. He noted that the transition occurred naturally when his daughter was around seven years old.

The rock star highlighted how the name Kate has become an identifier for those who know her personally. "She knows if someone called her Harlow, they don't really know her. It's kind of interesting," Madden observed. "But she just did that when she was in first grade, and it was never even a discussion."

Public Revelation and Transformation

The name change became public knowledge in January when Nicole Richie celebrated her daughter's 18th birthday on Instagram. Richie posted a carousel of throwback images showing her child growing up, tagging the teenager as @katemaddennn rather than using her birth name Harlow.

Richie confirmed the name preference in an interview with People magazine shortly afterward. "Yeah, she goes by her middle name," the television personality said. "She has her whole life." Regarding social media reactions to the change, Richie added, "I didn't look, but it makes sense... she goes by her middle name."

The birthday celebration also showcased a dramatic physical transformation, with the 18-year-old ditching her previous honey blonde locks for a striking jet black hair color. Kate has been displaying this new look on her personal Instagram account in recent months.

Family Support and Pride

Both parents have expressed immense pride in their children. Madden shared heartfelt sentiments about fatherhood during the podcast interview. "I always say my kids have made it so easy to be a dad. They are such easy people," he said. "It's not been some big sacrifice to be their dad. It feels to me like I was given a gift from god, these kids, cause they are really cool, easy, fun and they make me happy. They make me smile."

Family members showed their support on Richie's birthday Instagram post. Joel Madden commented, "That's my girl ❤️✨," while Kate's uncle, Benji Madden—married to actress Cameron Diaz—wrote, "How to make a grown man cry!!! love you Kate! You're a bad a**! Never forget it! Happy 18!!"

Parenting Philosophy and Teenage Years

Nicole Richie has previously opened up about her approach to raising teenagers, drawing from her own experiences. In a 2024 interview with Glamour magazine, she discussed transparency with her children. "I just so clearly remember what it's like to be a teenager. It feels like it happened yesterday for me. And they know everything I did," Richie expressed.

She continued: "I knew before I had them that I was going to have to be transparent with them about who I was. And I've actually found freedom in that. I didn't want my kids having some big discovery about me. And I've always been very open and honest with my kids and hope that they are open and honest with me."

Richie told Today that her "favorite stage" of parenting has been raising teenagers. "I just so clearly remember being 16 that it's actually surprising how quickly I can go back there," she explained. "When my daughter's telling me drama with her friends, I go, 'I remember. Laila Heckmath did that to me.' I remember first and last names, so it's fun. It's wild. And just the best."

Career Endeavors and Personal Growth

While balancing motherhood, Nicole Richie has maintained an active career in entertainment. She reunited with close friend Paris Hilton for the 2024 series Paris & Nicole: The Encore, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their iconic show The Simple Life. That same year, she appeared in the remake of the 1991 film Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead.

Reflecting on ageing during an Interview Magazine conversation, Richie described her 40s as "the absolute most fun decade." She added, "I find myself name-dropping my age now more than ever, simply because I want people to understand the state of mind that I'm in. I am not some 20-year-old idiot..."

The Madden-Richie family continues to navigate public attention while maintaining their personal boundaries, with Joel Madden's recent comments providing clarity on a matter that had intrigued fans and followers.
