Nicole, 44, and Joel, 47, are parents to Kate and their 16-year-old son Sparrow. In January, Nicole marked her eldest child's special milestone with a heartfelt Instagram tribute, sharing nostalgic throwback images. It was during this post that she tagged her daughter as Kate, publicly confirming the name change for the first time.
Revealing the Name Change Story
Last month, Joel Madden discussed Kate's name change during an appearance on BunnieXO's Dumb Blonde podcast. He explained that around age seven, his daughter decided to go by her middle name Kate after a school incident.
"She's been going by her middle name since she was in like, first grade," Joel said. "She chose it. She went to school, one day she came home, or we went to the open house night or whatever, and the teacher's like, 'Kate's doing great. She's so nice.' And we're like, 'Who's Kate?' And they're like, 'Your daughter Kate. That's what she said her name was.' We're like, 'Oh, she's going by her middle name now?' And we went home, and we're like, 'You go by Kate at school?' And she goes, 'Yeah, I like it.'"
He emphasised that the change was not a significant issue, stating, "It wasn't a big deal. I thought it was cool. And there was no discussion. It wasn't a big deal." Joel added that using the name Harlow now would indicate someone does not know her personally, as everyone close to her calls her Kate.
Parental Pride and Open Communication
Joel expressed immense pride in both his children, describing them as easy and joyful. "I always say my kids have made it so easy to be a dad. They are such easy people," he said. "It's not been some big sacrifice to be their dad. It feels to me like I was given a gift from god, these kids, cause they are really cool, easy, fun and they make me happy. They make me smile."
Nicole has previously opened up about raising her teenagers, admitting she has been transparent with them about her own wild teenage antics. In an interview with Glamour, she shared, "I just so clearly remember what it's like to be a teenager. It feels like it happened yesterday for me. And they know everything I did. I knew before I had them that I was going to have to be transparent with them about who I was. And I've actually found freedom in that."
She added, "I didn't want my kids having some big discovery about me. And I've always been very open and honest with my kids and hope that they are open and honest with me." This approach to parenting underscores the family's close-knit dynamic and supportive environment.
