Kerry Katona and her partner Paolo Margaglione have returned to the UK following a holiday in Spain, just days after the singer experienced a terrifying health scare that saw her hospitalised with a suspected stroke. The couple touched down at Manchester Airport on Saturday, with the Atomic Kitten star appearing in good spirits despite the recent ordeal.
Sun-Soaked Getaway After Hospital Drama
The 45-year-old celebrity and her 33-year-old boyfriend, who met on the set of Celebs Go Dating, enjoyed a luxurious yacht trip in Marbella on Thursday. This marked Kerry's first public appearance since being rushed to hospital earlier in the week. The holiday celebration included her son Maxwell, who was celebrating his 18th birthday, and her 19-year-old daughter Heidi, both children from her marriage to Mark Croft.
The Terrifying Health Emergency
Kerry's Spanish getaway came just one day after she revealed the details of a frightening medical episode that left her fearing for her life. While watching her eldest daughter Molly perform in a London play, Kerry's daughter Heidi noticed something was wrong with her mother's facial expressions.
"Heidi was like, 'Mum, what's wrong with your face?' I started panicking," Kerry told The Mirror. "I discreetly left, went to my hotel and asked to see a doctor. I told the staff, 'Something's not right.'"
When told a doctor wouldn't be available for four hours, Kerry took a taxi to St Thomas' Hospital where medical staff immediately treated her case as a potential stroke. She was blue-lighted in an ambulance to King's College Hospital as her symptoms worsened.
Medical Investigation and Diagnosis
During the hospital stay, Kerry underwent extensive tests and CT scans to determine the cause of her slurred speech and facial paralysis. While doctors ruled out a stroke, the scans revealed concerning findings.
"The CT scans showed there's a part of my brain that's broken and isn't able to send signals to my face due to stress," Kerry explained. She has since noticed her speech sounds different than it does in her head and experiences shooting pains in her head.
Family Concerns and Recovery Plans
During the frightening episode, Kerry messaged all five of her children - Molly, 24, Lilly, 23, Heidi, 19, Max, 18, and Dylan-Jorge, 12 - fearing she might never speak to them again.
"It really, really scared me. I texted all my children and told them I loved them. I've never been so scared in my life," she admitted.
Medical professionals have recommended speech therapy and facial exercises, assuring Kerry that her movement and speech should gradually return. However, the singer confessed she's "getting a bit panicky with it" as she navigates the recovery process.
Understanding Stroke Risks
While Kerry's condition was ultimately not diagnosed as a stroke, the incident highlights the seriousness of such medical emergencies. Strokes occur when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted, either through blockage (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke).
Common risk factors include:
- Age and family history
- High blood pressure
- Smoking and obesity
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Diabetes and atrial fibrillation
Key symptoms that require immediate medical attention include sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), confusion, trouble speaking or understanding, vision problems, walking difficulties, and severe headaches without known cause.
Kerry's experience serves as a stark reminder of how quickly health situations can change, as she reflected: "An hour ago I was watching our Molly in a play and now I'm being treated for a stroke. What the actual f**k? It just shows how quickly things can change."
