Leighton Meester Addresses Viral Ariana Grande Red Carpet Incident

Leighton Meester has finally broken her silence regarding the viral moment from last month when she encountered Ariana Grande on the red carpet. The Gossip Girl star, 39, provided clarity on the brief exchange that occurred at the Critics Choice Awards in early January, describing the situation as "embarrassing" for both herself and her husband, Adam Brody, 46.

The Controversial Exchange

During the January 4 event, Grande approached Meester and exclaimed, "I love you so much. Wow, wow, wow." In a video that quickly spread across social media platforms, Meester appeared to respond by saying "Wah, wah, wah" while chuckling. This led to immediate backlash from fans who accused the actress of mocking the pop star.

The online reaction was divided, with some viewers insisting Meester was being playful while others criticized her perceived disrespect toward Grande. The clip generated significant discussion across various social media platforms throughout January.

Meester's Explanation

Over a month later, Meester addressed the incident during an appearance on the season finale of Penn Badgley's Podcrushed podcast. She revealed that she had actually misheard Grande's words due to the noisy environment and her own hearing limitations.

"I was with Kate, my publicist," Meester recalled. "And Ariana said something to me. Kate turns around, and we both heard that she said, 'Hi, I love you. Wah, wah, wah.'"

The actress explained that she believed Grande was referencing a moment from the previous year's Critics Choice Awards when Meester became emotional while watching her husband accept an award. Since Meester and her publicist had just been discussing that teary-eyed moment, she assumed Grande had overheard and was making a lighthearted joke.

"I couldn't hear her properly. She was walking away, and I thought, 'Oh, she's kind of a comedy queen. She's just being funny,'" Meester explained.

The Second Encounter

Meester also shared that she ran into Grande again approximately one week after the viral incident. During this second meeting, she clarified the misunderstanding directly with the pop star.

"Turns out she didn't say that," Meester admitted. "And then I saw her the next week, and I was like, 'I have to tell you, I thought you said that.' And she's like, 'You thought I said wah, wah, wah? That's so funny.' And I was like, 'No, it's an old person not being able to hear. That is so embarrassing.'"

Brody's Awards Recognition

The red carpet incident occurred as Meester attended the Critics Choice Awards to support her husband, Adam Brody. The former OC star received a nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his leading role in the second season of Netflix's Nobody Wants This.

The show itself earned a nomination for Best Comedy Series, with several cast members including Kristen Bell, Justine Lupe, and Timothy Simons also receiving recognition. Meester herself appeared in a guest star role during the show's second season.

While Brody did not win this year's award—which went to Seth Rogen for his role in Apple TV's The Studio—he had previously won the same category the year before for the debut season of Nobody Wants This. During his 2025 acceptance speech, Brody emotionally thanked his wife, bringing Meester to tears in the audience.

"My darling, darling, darling wife Leighton," Brody said at the time. "Thank you for sharing this life with me and this journey with me. Thank you for our family. I love you with all my heart."

Personal Background

Meester and Brody have been married for over a decade, having met in 2011 while co-starring in the independent film The Oranges. They began dating in early 2013 and married the following year. The couple are parents to ten-year-old daughter Arlo and a five-year-old son whose name they have chosen to keep private.

The viral red carpet moment, while initially creating controversy, has now been clarified as a simple misunderstanding between two celebrities in a loud, crowded environment. Meester's candid explanation provides context to what many perceived as awkward behavior, revealing the human element behind celebrity interactions that often become magnified through social media scrutiny.
