Scottish television host Lorraine Kelly has humorously disclosed the unconventional method she used to capture the heart of her husband, Steve Smith, after an immediate attraction, even though her initial advances were initially turned down. Lorraine, 66, admitted that she took a fancy to Steve, a retired TV cameraman aged 65, instantly. Their chance came during a filming segment in Glencoe with a mountain rescue team. "I got him terribly drunk and leapt on him like a ninja. He had no defence, poor soul," she confessed. She noted the challenges of dating a colleague in a small team, emphasizing the need for certainty in such relationships.
Despite the risky start, her bold move paid off, and the couple, who reside in Berkshire, have built one of the most solid marriages in showbiz. They share one child, influencer Rosie, 31, who is now a mother herself.
Travel and Humour as Pillars of Their Relationship
Lorraine revealed that travel is a central passion for her and Steve, often choosing it over material possessions. "A lot of people splurge on jewellery or cars, but I don't own a car and I only have one pair of earrings. Travel is the only thing my husband and I really spend money on," she told The Sunday Times Home. Their adventures have taken them across Asia, Africa, and even Antarctica, where they celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in 2017 by following explorer Ernest Shackleton's footsteps.
In addition to travel, humour plays a key role in their bond. Lorraine explained, "Steve still makes me laugh! He’s infuriating and I infuriate him, but we always end up laughing." She also shared that Steve sends her cheeky texts, such as "Nice boobies!" when she wears revealing outfits on-air, highlighting their ongoing attraction.
Future Plans and Reflections
Looking ahead, Lorraine mentioned plans to celebrate their 35th anniversary next year with trips to Mongolia or the Falklands, describing the latter as "like Scotland with penguins." Currently, she is featured in Lorraine Kelly's Norwegian Odyssey on Channel 4, exploring Norway's epic fjords, while the couple continues to embark on annual African safaris to countries like Namibia and Tanzania.
