Coronation Street Star Lucy Fallon Shares Candid Insights on Motherhood and Family Life
Coronation Street actress Lucy Fallon, renowned for her role as Bethany Platt, has opened up about the realities of motherhood while balancing her career and life with footballer fiancé Ryan Ledson. In an exclusive interview, the 30-year-old star reveals the joys and challenges of raising her two young children, Sonny, born in 2023, and Nancy, born in 2025.
The Demands of Parenting Two Young Children
Lucy admits that managing her energetic toddlers is no small feat. "They're great, but they're such a handful — especially Sonny at the moment," she says with a laugh. "He's got the terrible twos a little bit late, I'd say!" The transition from one child to two proved more difficult than anticipated, with Lucy noting that juggling a toddler, a baby, and her acting commitments has been quite hard.
She reflects on the age gap between Sonny and Nancy, explaining that while it's lovely to see their interactions now, the early days were particularly challenging. "I think going from zero to one was easier," Lucy shares. "Sonny was still a baby when I had Nancy, and the juggle of having a toddler, a baby, and work is quite hard."
The Importance of a Supportive 'Village'
Despite the challenges, Lucy emphasizes how fortunate she and Ryan are to have a strong support network. "As they say, it takes a village and luckily, we have a village," she says. "I know we're privileged — not everybody gets that luxury. My mum and Ryan's mum help out a lot. We take the help where we can get it!" This support has been crucial, especially with Ryan's demanding football schedule at Huddersfield Town.
Lucy also discusses the practical adjustments of parenthood, such as planning simple outings in advance. "I did have a few times when I needed to go and get some milk and I realised, 'I need to take you with me, you can't stay here on your own!'" she recalls. "It gets easier because you get your groove, but that takes getting used to."
Navigating Work-Life Balance and Mum Guilt
With long filming days on Coronation Street, often lasting up to 12 hours, Lucy faces the common struggle of balancing work and family. She admits to experiencing 'mum guilt', particularly with Nancy, as she returned to work when her daughter was only six months old. "Nancy was only six months old when she went to nursery, so I felt incredibly guilty for that," Lucy confesses. However, she finds comfort in seeing Nancy thrive at nursery, where she happily interacts with her keyworker.
Sonny and Nancy attend nursery two days a week, which Lucy describes as a "godsend". "I feel like Sonny learns a lot and he's really confident, which I really love. He's great with other children and I put that down to the nursery."
Cherishing Every Moment and Family Dynamics
Lucy speaks emotionally about the fleeting nature of childhood, urging parents to savor every stage. "You grieve that little section of life," she says, reflecting on how quickly her children are growing. "I remember when Sonny turned four weeks old, I hysterically sobbed because I was like, 'Oh no, he's a month old, and now he's three!' It goes so quickly — you've just got to enjoy every stage because you'll never get that version of them again."
Regarding future family plans, Lucy states that she and Ryan have no intentions of having more children. "I'm completely out of that baby stage and I'll never get it back," she admits, emphasizing her focus on cherishing the present with Sonny and Nancy.
Managing Relationship Amidst Busy Schedules
Ryan's football career adds another layer of complexity to their family life. Lucy explains that his schedule often requires him to stay away on Fridays and weekends, leading to solo parenting during the week. "It's hard, because I've had a full week of parenting, most times solo, then at the weekend he's away playing football," she says. "His schedule changes all the time. It's a huge juggle, but we manage."
When they are together, Lucy reveals that their love language is "acts of service". Simple gestures, like Ryan making her a drink or helping with bedtime routines, strengthen their bond amidst the chaos. "If Ryan has made me a big pint of juice with ice in it, that's really nice," she shares with a smile.
Privacy and Social Media Boundaries
As a public figure, Lucy is mindful of sharing her children's lives on social media. "I only divulge what I want to," she explains. "You have to be quite mindful when you have children. I don't want to share too much, but they are my children and I want to show them off, because I'm very proud of them." This balanced approach allows her to celebrate her family while protecting their privacy.
Future Plans and Reflections on Coronation Street
Lucy remains committed to her role on Coronation Street, where she has worked since 2015. "I've done that once before, I don't plan on doing it again," she says regarding any potential departure. She appreciates the flexibility in her schedule, which currently allows more time with her children, though she anticipates busier periods ahead.
Family holidays are on hold for now, as Lucy's request for time off in June was rejected due to work commitments. She recalls their first trip abroad with Sonny to Portugal, noting that the anxiety beforehand was worse than the reality. "That's the thing with parenting, sometimes the thought of something is more scary than the reality, you have to just go for it," she advises.
Through it all, Lucy Fallon embraces the chaos and joy of motherhood, supported by her fiancé and family, while continuing to shine on the iconic cobbles of Weatherfield.
