Lulu's Candid Reflections on Life, Sobriety, and Mortality at 77
Music icon Lulu has offered a remarkably frank admission about contemplating her own mortality at the age of 77. The legendary singer, best known for hits like "Shout!" and her role in Absolutely Fabulous, revealed that achieving sobriety has brought her face-to-face with thoughts about her lifespan and how much time she has left.
A Journey to Sobriety and Mental Health Advocacy
Lulu has been openly discussing her personal struggles in recent years, which ultimately led her to quit alcohol. She emphasized that keeping her drinking habits secret felt "like living a lie" and now wants to use her platform to help others facing similar challenges.
The singer is actively involved with Lulu's Mental Health Trust, an organization dedicated to supporting those struggling with various issues. "We will choose, it's a gifting situation, where we get together, and research who we're going to give the money to," she explained, noting that last year's recipient was Young Minds.
Practical Advice for Those Struggling
When asked what advice she would give to people facing difficulties with addiction or mental health, Lulu was unequivocal: "Go to a meeting. Go to an AA meeting. I would say that, absolutely. It's been proven that it's the only way to really help and support alcoholics, addicts."
She elaborated on the broad spectrum of issues people might face: "You can be a spender, you can be a gambler, you can have food issues, drug issues, alcohol issues, mental health issues and there's amazing work being done by people. It was the only time I felt I could talk freely without the shame overwhelming me."
Balancing a Busy Life with Personal Reflection
Despite her age, Lulu maintains an incredibly active schedule. She's currently preparing for a one-night-only concert at the Royal Albert Hall in June, where she'll be joined by fellow stars including Gary Barlow and Boy George. "I'm 77, and I think I'm 15, so I run like a mad woman," she joked about her energetic lifestyle.
However, this busy period has also prompted deeper reflection. "I've upped my meetings because I've got so much going on," she shared. "Also, at my point in life, mortality issues and you start thinking about your lifespan and wondering about how much it's going to last. There's just issues that you worry about. I'm a bit of a worry wart!"
A Message of Hope and Support
Throughout her interview, Lulu emphasized the importance of seeking help and breaking the silence around mental health and addiction. "Anyone who is struggling - what I didn't know when I was younger, there is help. You don't have to feel alone. You'd be surprised to know the number of people struggling," she said, offering encouragement to those who might be suffering in silence.
The singer's candid discussion about mortality, sobriety, and mental health advocacy comes as she continues to balance a thriving career with personal reflection and a commitment to helping others through her charitable work.
