Married At First Sight Star Mel Schilling Dies After Brave Cancer Battle

Mel Schilling, the beloved romance coach from Married At First Sight, has passed away at age 54 following a courageous two-year fight against colon cancer. Her husband Gareth Brisbane announced the devastating news on Tuesday, revealing she died "surrounded by love" after the disease spread to her brain.

A Love Story Born From Dating Struggles

While Mel became famous for helping others find love on both the Australian and UK versions of MAFS, her own romantic journey was marked by significant challenges. She spent most of her thirties single, describing herself as "casually dating, but only half-heartedly" during that period.

"I dated the Man Child, the Commitmentphobe, the Class Clown – the dating archetypes we've all encountered," she told Metro in 2023. "I made lots of mistakes so my clients don't have to."

Mel met Gareth 15 years ago when she was nearly 40, connecting through the dating website eHarmony. Despite living in different Australian cities initially, they built their relationship through six weeks of long-distance communication before meeting in person.

Building a Family Against the Odds

The couple's relationship progressed rapidly, with marriage following in Bali in July 2018. Their path to parenthood proved difficult, experiencing a devastating miscarriage before successfully having daughter Maddie through IVF when Mel was 42.

"I was single for my entire thirties," Mel previously explained to OK! Magazine. "I was busy travelling the world, working overseas, I was all about building my business and just living a great life. He just turned my world upside down."

The family lived in Melbourne and Bali before settling in the UK, where they established a quiet life away from the television spotlight.

A Courageous Final Battle

Mel was first diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023 after doctors discovered a 5cm tumour. Despite undergoing surgery and 16 rounds of chemotherapy while continuing to film MAFS, the cancer spread to her lungs in 2024 and eventually to her brain.

In her final Instagram post last week, Mel revealed: "My light is starting to fade – and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love."

Gareth's emotional tribute described her final moments: "In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life."

Tributes Pour In From Colleagues and Friends

Channel 4 released a statement praising Mel's contribution: "We're privileged to be the channel that is home to Mel's work, which was at the heart of Married at First Sight's phenomenal success. It reflected her fierce advocacy for other women, her passion for healthy relationships and her mission to unite people in love."

MAFS UK star Laura Vaughn remembered: "You were a beacon of light to all who knew you, loved you and watched you around the world. To know you is to be in awe of you."

Other celebrities including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Fearne Cotton, and Vicky Pattison joined the outpouring of grief and support for Mel's family.

A Legacy of Love and Resilience

Mel's journey from dating struggles to finding her "soulmate" later in life, followed by her brave public cancer battle, has left an indelible mark on fans and colleagues alike. Her husband Gareth concluded his tribute with a poignant message: "Life can be beautiful, and life can be incredibly cruel. If you can do anything to honour Mel, please live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff."

The romance coach who helped countless others find love ultimately discovered her own enduring love story, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, compassion, and the importance of cherishing every moment.
