Melissa Joan Hart Faces Backlash Over Controversial Cat Kick Video
Melissa Joan Hart has ignited a firestorm of criticism online after sharing a video where she humorously kicks a fake cat in a tribute to her iconic role in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The actress, aged 49, posted the clip on Instagram as a playful homage to the beloved series that aired from 1996 to 2003, but many viewers were far from amused.
Video Details and Fan Reactions
In the video, Hart is seen sitting on a chair with a stuffed toy version of Salem, the talking black cat from the show, resting on her lap. A text overlay reads, 'When people ask me if I'm a cat person,' as she suddenly tosses the toy into the air and kicks it out of the frame. The scene then cuts to her gently petting a real dog beside her.
Hart attempted to defuse the situation in her caption, stating, 'No Salems were harmed in the filming of this silly video. P.S. I like cats, but I love dogs!' However, the gesture did little to placate outraged fans.
Comments flooded in, with users branding the video as 'tasteless' and 'disgusting'. One user wrote, 'Real cats and real animal lovers don't find this funny at all. I love dark humor but this ain't it sis.' Another added, 'That was heartbreaking. No violence against any kind of animal!'
Further criticism highlighted concerns about promoting animal abuse, with a fan noting, 'That was a bad joke, it encourages violence against real animals, I thought that was a sad post.' Others expressed disappointment, with one stating, 'Unfollowing. This broke my heart I loved Melissa,' and another saying, 'This isn't your best work, still a fan but this was hard to watch.'
Hart's Career and Personal Reflections
Melissa Joan Hart first rose to fame at age 15 as Clarissa Darling in the Nickelodeon sitcom Clarissa Explains It All. She solidified her status as a 1990s teen icon by starring as Sabrina Spellman in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Her career has since included roles in Melissa & Joey from 2010 to 2015, the film Drive Me Crazy, Netflix's No Good Nick, and various Lifetime movies. She also hosts a podcast and competed in season nine of The Masked Singer in 2023.
In her personal life, Hart married musician Mark Wilkerson in 2003, and they have three children together. Earlier this month, she reflected on her early fame, telling People magazine that while being a child star gave her a strong work ethic and maturity, it also stunted her social growth. She credited her parents, producer Paula Hart and actor William Hart, for ensuring she had a normal childhood despite her acting career, saying, 'I pretty much had a normal childhood, even though I was acting since I was four. So I don't regret anything.'
The controversy underscores the fine line celebrities walk when using humor in social media posts, especially when it touches on sensitive topics like animal welfare.
