Millie Mackintosh has candidly revealed how she has learned to "enjoy being alone" and prioritise herself, following the announcement of her unexpected separation from husband Hugo Taylor. The former Made In Chelsea star, aged 36, discussed her personal evolution on the podcast A Millennial Mind this week, focusing on rebuilding her identity after becoming sober.
A Transformative Journey to Sobriety
Detailing the profound impact of her decision to quit alcohol, Millie explained that sobriety prompted a complete re-evaluation of her personality and preferences. She described this process as "burning down the old me," a necessary step to rediscover her true self without the influence of alcohol. The mother-of-two emphasised that this journey has allowed her to start "stepping into the woman that I truly want to be," achieving a level of self-knowledge and self-love that enables her to cherish her own company.
Rediscovering Identity and Embracing Introversion
Millie shared that sobriety revealed she is not the "confident extrovert" she once perceived herself to be. Instead, she identified as a "sensitive introvert" with ADHD, who easily becomes overstimulated and genuinely prefers small gatherings, early nights, and quality time with her dog and children. She stressed that the most crucial relationship in life is the one with oneself, admitting that during her drinking years, she carried immense shame and self-hatred.
Her journey to self-love remains ongoing, but Millie highlighted that the "biggest gift" has been learning to appreciate solitude. "Actually getting to a point where being alone with my thoughts isn't torture. I think that's the biggest gift," she reflected. This newfound comfort with herself has empowered her to start choosing herself, a shift she described as powerful and transformative.
Looking Forward After Marital Split
Despite the recent end of her seven-year marriage to Hugo Taylor, aged 39, Millie expressed excitement for the future. She believes that by valuing herself more highly and making self-prioritising choices, she can become a "magnetic person that attracts their desires." The couple, who share daughters Sienna, five, and Aurelia, four, announced their separation on February 2, with sources confirming their commitment to co-parenting and maintaining a loving family environment.
Historical Relationships and Personal Growth
Millie and Hugo first met as teenagers and initially dated during their time on E4's Made In Chelsea, though their early relationship ended amid cheating allegations. After a high-profile marriage to rapper Professor Green (Stephen Manderson) from 2013 to 2016, Millie rekindled her romance with Hugo, marrying him in June 2018 and welcoming their two daughters in subsequent years.
Recently, Millie attended a wellness retreat in India, sharing posts that hinted at a new chapter in her life, including quotes about accepting the present moment and owning one's power. Her journey, documented in her book Bad Drunk after quitting alcohol in summer 2022, continues to inspire discussions on sobriety, mental health, and personal reinvention.
