Miranda Hart Shares Lyme Disease Weight Shame in Candid Post

Comedian Miranda Hart has bravely opened up about her ongoing struggle with Lyme disease and the associated feelings of shame surrounding weight gain in a candid Facebook post. The 53-year-old star showcased her slim figure in a plunging lycra ensemble, paired with leggings and white Birkenstocks, as she perched on a velvet sofa. Alongside the rare picture, she shared a heartfelt caption detailing her emotional journey.

Confronting Shame and Weight Fluctuations

In her post, Miranda Hart revealed that she has been battling Lyme disease for years, a condition that has caused significant involuntary weight fluctuations. This health challenge forced her to step away from the public spotlight, impacting her career and personal life. She wrote about dismantling the shame tied to her weight gain, emphasizing that it was not about striving for an aesthetic ideal but rather feeling uncomfortable because the changes did not represent her natural self.

Miranda expressed pride in overcoming much of this shame, stating, "I have found it incredibly hard not to feel shame from gaining weight over the last three years. Not because of striving for an aesthetic ideal but because it doesn't represent me and who I naturally am. But life happens. Illness happens." She highlighted the importance of self-compassion as a healing tool, adding, "And it's a great way to keep focusing on the greatest healer – self-compassion. If I lose it or not I know I am loved. Peace out."

Personal Revelations and Tattoo Regrets

The Facebook photo also showcased one of Miranda's two tattoos: Chinese symbols on her arm, which she previously admitted regretting. In a past interview with Ginny Dougary, she described the tattoo as "pretty horrible" and clarified that she was sober when she got it, attributing it to an attempt to break away from public-school stereotypes. She also has a dove and a heart tattoo on her ankle, which she "quite likes," symbolizing peace and love.

Love and Marriage Amidst Health Struggles

Miranda Hart offered a rare glimpse into her personal life, discussing how "freeing it is to be loved" in her marriage to Richard Fairs, 61. She revealed they met during lockdown when he came to fix mould in her £2 million house, referring to him initially as "The Boy from Bristol" or "The Mould Man" to keep his identity private. In her memoir, I Haven't Been Entirely Honest With You, she explained that they fell in love quickly, getting engaged in January during a trip to Kew Gardens in west London.

Reflecting on their meeting, Miranda said, "The way we met was quite extraordinary. At the beginning of the book I had this real longing not to be alone anymore and I admitted that to myself. It was quite a pain because when we long for what we want, it's at a time where we don't have it so admitting that to yourself is a painful time. I was in my forties and single." She added that they met on the final day of the mould removal works and fell in love "there and then."

Career Impact and Public Absence

Miranda Hart rose to fame with her self-titled sitcom series in 2009 and later starred in Call The Midwife as Chummy from 2012 until 2015. However, her health issues led to a decade-long absence from public life, with reports indicating she did not return for the sixth series of the BBC drama due to ill health. Her battle with Lyme disease, which she first revealed in 2014, has been a significant factor in this hiatus, causing weight gain and other challenges that she continues to address openly.

Through her candid post, Miranda Hart not only shares her personal struggles but also promotes a message of self-acceptance and compassion, inspiring others facing similar health and body image issues.
