Rita Wilson's Shocking Family Discovery
In a deeply personal revelation, actress Rita Wilson has shared the astonishing discovery that her late father, Allan Wilson, had a secret second family in his native Bulgaria before emigrating to the United States. The 69-year-old Sleepless in Seattle star discussed this long-concealed family history during Tuesday's episode of the How to Fail With Elizabeth Day podcast, describing how the truth emerged during her participation in the documentary series Who Do You Think You Are? in 2012.
The Heartbreaking Details
Wilson learned that her father, born Hassan Halilov Ibrahimoff, had been married to a woman named Alice in Bulgaria, who tragically died during childbirth. Their son, Emil, was born on December 26 but survived only four months before succumbing to an infection. This devastating loss occurred shortly after World War II, during a period of extreme poverty in Bulgaria where basic necessities like formula were scarce.
"I still can't get over that," Wilson confessed, expressing her sorrow that her father "never said anything to us. I wish I could have talked to him about that." She described how her Greek Orthodox family maintained strict privacy about personal matters, a cultural trait that kept this chapter of her father's life hidden for decades.
Poignant Family Connections
In what Wilson called a "weird" and heartbreaking coincidence, she revealed that both her sister's firstborn child and her own youngest son share Emil's December 26 birthday. She reflected on how her father must have carried this knowledge silently while celebrating subsequent grandchildren's birthdays on that same date.
"I think of my dad, all of those years, celebrating all those birthdays, and knowing that he had a child born on December 26, Emil, who passed away," she shared emotionally.
Her Father's American Life
After this tragedy, Allan Wilson emigrated to the United States in 1949, eventually settling in Los Angeles where he married Dorothy Wilson. Together they raised Rita and her siblings Chris and Lily. Despite having limited formal education, Wilson described her parents as "incredibly smart and incredibly intuitive" with strong values.
She praised her father's work ethic and financial responsibility, noting that he supported his family, purchased a home while working as a bartender, and maintained a debt-free life throughout his 59-year marriage to her mother.
Recent Tributes and Reflections
Wilson has frequently honored her father's memory publicly, including a 2024 Instagram tribute where she wrote: "Dad. Happy Heaven Birthday. You are so missed. I am so grateful for all you taught me about courage, hard work, devotion to family, generosity of spirit."
In 2021, she shared on Facebook: "My dad escaped communist Bulgaria for a life of freedom in America. His vision and courage continue to inspire me." She questioned whether his bravery might have been passed down to enable her own dreams.
Wilson's Current Life and Career
Married to Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks since 1988, Wilson shares sons Chet (35) and Truman (30) with her husband. Hanks also has two adult children from his previous marriage. Professionally, Wilson continues to balance acting and music careers, with an upcoming film Start Without Me alongside Finn Wittrock and her sixth studio album Sound of a Woman scheduled for release on May 1.
Reflecting on her family's history, Wilson concluded: "I think if we were all more open with each other, then we all can see that we're all in the same boat." Her discovery serves as a poignant reminder of the complex histories that shape families across generations and continents.
