Sam Thompson has disclosed the substantial hidden financial burden resulting from his separation from Zara McDermott, as he candidly discussed the situation on Wednesday. The 33-year-old television personality has been compelled to hire builders for his £1 million Chelsea residence, which he formerly shared with his 29-year-old ex-partner.
The Costly Aftermath of a Celebrity Breakup
Sam and Zara were in a relationship for five years before parting ways in December 2024. Following the split, Zara vacated the property and has since begun dating 34-year-old One Direction star Louis Tomlinson. Now, Sam has revealed that he is undertaking a significant renovation project, specifically redoing his kitchen for the second time in just two years.
Personalised Details Lead to Expensive Changes
The necessity for this renovation stems from personalised engravings left in the kitchen. During an episode of his podcast Staying Relevant with friend Pete Wicks, Sam explained the predicament. 'The builders are coming back,' he stated, highlighting the ongoing nature of the work.
Pete Wicks remarked on the situation, noting, 'Sam has been renovating his house for five years and it looks lovely, but I don't know what it is—your builders are moving in. Your kitchen has been done twice in like two years.' Sam responded with clarity, 'I had to redo the kitchen, you know I had to. It was a lovely kitchen at the start, but I had a relationship finish and I had names carved into the wood. It wasn't my idea, it wasn't!'
Elaborating further, Pete added, 'His initials and his partner's were engraved into all the door handles.' Sam continued, 'Basically they were also on the drawers, so I had to change the kitchen. It wasn't my idea I want to stress that, but they chiselled our initials in so I couldn't like cover it up. But yeah I have to change my kitchen again.'
Instagram Evidence of the Personalised Kitchen
Previously, Sam and Zara shared updates of their home renovations on a dedicated Instagram account, which included glimpses of these personalised details. They posted about their kitchen handles, writing, 'How totally gorgeous are these handles. We love this shade of bronze too… it has so much depth. Plus… check pic 2. can you notice anything?' This hinted at the 'S' and 'Z' initials engraved into the bronze door handles.
The couple's open-plan kitchen featured a large stone island at its centre, complemented by sizeable grey painted cupboards. Inside their larder cupboard, three drawers were personalised: one with Sam's name, another with Zara's name engraved, and the bottom drawer labelled for dried goods.
Moving On: New Relationships and Lives
Since the split, both individuals have moved forward with new partners. Zara McDermott is now in a relationship with Louis Tomlinson, going public in March 2025. Reports suggest she has moved into Louis's multi-million-pound north London mansion, after initially returning to her parents' home following her departure from the Fulham property she shared with Sam.
In August of last year, insiders revealed, 'They're smitten and she has been spending all of her time at his place, she's pretty much moved in. Zara has even started making her social media videos from there instead of her parents' [home].' They added, 'She had been back at her family home after her split from her ex... But Louis's home and her parents' house are nowhere near each other, so it made sense that she is spending more time at his.'
Zara's first Instagram post with Louis featured a kissing photo, with Louis commenting 'I love you'. The relationship has garnered support from their siblings, with Zara's brother calling them a 'beautiful couple' and Louis's sister expressing 'love love'.
Sam Thompson's New Romance
Meanwhile, Sam Thompson has embarked on a new relationship with model Talitha Balinska, which began in September last year. He confirmed the relationship in early December and has since shared intimate details about their connection.
During a podcast discussion about Valentine's Day plans, Sam confessed to telling Talitha he loves her for the first time. He described the moment as awkward yet endearing, saying, 'Yeah, I have. It was actually classic, I was so awkward, it was on the sofa.' He explained his gradual approach, 'I kept on saying, instead of I love you "I like you" and then "I like you a lot", and so it's going in steps.'
Sam recounted the pivotal conversation, 'And then I was sat on the sofa and I said "you know when I say I like you, it means something else". And then she was like "what does it mean?" and then I panicked, and I went "it means I hate you".' After this humorous misstep, he clarified, 'And then I was like "I think I love you".' Talitha responded in kind, leading to a moment of shared laughter. Sam noted, 'That's why I love her—we are both quite awkward people, and so it was quite a nice moment.' Since then, he admits he 'can't stop' telling her.
The financial and emotional costs of Sam Thompson's split from Zara McDermott are now coming to light, with a kitchen renovation serving as a tangible reminder of their past relationship. As both parties forge new paths, the expenses incurred highlight the often-overlooked practical consequences of celebrity breakups.
