Vogue Williams Opens Up About Maintaining Independence in Marriage

Irish podcast presenter Vogue Williams has candidly revealed that she prefers to maintain a "separate life" from her husband, former Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews. The couple, who have been married since 2018 and share three children, discussed their relationship dynamics during a recent appearance at Meta's headquarters in Dublin.

Initial Doubts and Unlikely Romance

Williams, 40, admitted that when she first encountered Matthews while filming Channel 4's The Jump in 2017, she "didn't fancy" him and believed he "wasn't for her." In her autobiography Big Mouth, she confesses she worried a romance wouldn't "have gone very well" because he "was yet to form a serious bone in his body," while she tended to get "serious quickly."

Despite these reservations, their relationship blossomed after Matthews arrived at The Jump set dressed in tracksuit bottoms and slippers, "reeking of booze." Williams wrote that although she considered him "a man made of red flags" and not for her, she "loved his personality." Her friends encouraged the connection, with Williams revealing they "really wanted me to sleep with Spencer" and thought he'd fit in with their social circle.

The Proposal and Wedding

Romance flourished quickly, and in January 2018, Matthews proposed during an outing to see The Lion King in London. The couple married just five months later in June 2018 at Glen Affric, the Matthews family's Scottish estate. They have since welcomed three children together: Theodore, Gigi, and Otto.

Maintaining Separate Social Lives

During her Dublin appearance, Williams emphasized the importance of maintaining independence within her marriage. She recounted a recent incident where Matthews irritated her while she was preparing to spend time with her My Therapist Ghosted Me co-host Joanne McNally.

"I try to, I like to have a separate life as well," Williams explained. "Spenny he has his friends and I have my friends." When asked who she favours between McNally and her husband, she responded pragmatically: "Well it depends what I need them for."

Dating App Revelation

In a previous episode of her podcast Vogue and Amber, Williams revealed she would have "swiped past" Matthews had they encountered each other on a dating app. Responding to a listener struggling with digital dating platforms, she remarked: "You're just judging someone completely on the way they look."

"And I always say this, Spencer is obviously gorgeous, but he wouldn't have been my type when we met. And I would have swiped past him on a dating app," Williams continued. "And then we met, and we were mad about each other because we just loved each other's personalities. So, I think trying to meet somebody in real life, although it can be hard, can be a really amazing thing."

The couple's relationship demonstrates how initial impressions can be misleading and how maintaining individual identities within marriage can contribute to long-term partnership success.
