Mike Vrabel's efforts to keep a low profile have suffered a significant setback after the New England Patriots head coach received an unwelcome accolade on Tuesday. The 50-year-old is currently undergoing professional counselling amid allegations of an affair with sports reporter Dianna Russini, who resigned from The Athletic after Page Six released photos of the pair at a $2,500-a-night Arizona retreat.
Allegations and Apologies
Both Vrabel and Russini, who are married with children, initially denied the affair claims, insisting they were at the resort with a larger group. However, Vrabel later issued a groveling apology to his family and stepped away from the 2026 NFL Draft to focus on his counselling and maintain a low profile. Despite these efforts, he has been thrust back into the spotlight after being named Boston Magazine's latest cover star, following his inclusion on their '150 Most Influential Bostonians' list, revealed on Tuesday afternoon.
Cover Story
The embattled Patriots head coach appears on the front cover alongside his quarterback, Drake Maye, for the May edition of the magazine. In the cover photo, both Vrabel and Maye are beaming with smiles after being named joint-most influential Bostonians this year. The duo beat out Massachusetts governor Maura Healey, Boston mayor Michelle Wu, and Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan. There was no mention of Vrabel's ongoing scandal in the magazine, though one section credited the duo for showing 'the city what it looks like to overcome adversity - on the field and off'.
Online Sleuths Uncover Playlist
In the latest twist, online sleuths believe they have uncovered a Spotify playlist that Russini made for Vrabel during a low moment in his NFL coaching career. The revelations came to light on Monday night, showing Russini put together a playlist named 'TURNIN THE PAGE' on December 19, 2022—just a day after Vrabel's Tennessee Titans team suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, against the Los Angeles Chargers. The playlist includes 18 songs, with 15 visible, and was shared with just one person named 'Mike'. Later, it was alleged that Vrabel changed his Spotify username from 'Mike' to 'Tycar', a mashup of his sons' names, Tyler and Carter.
Songs and Social Media Activity
The playlist features songs from Beyonce, P!nk, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N' Roses, KISS, and Def Leppard. It appeared to have been deleted hours later. Last week, Russini also shut down her X account. Russini, 43, resigned from The Athletic earlier this month amid the bombshell allegations. Page Six first published pictures of the pair at the adults-only resort in Sedona, Arizona, on March 28, showing them hugging, lounging poolside, and laughing together. Other photos emerged last week appearing to show the pair looking cozy at a New York bar back in 2020, when Vrabel was coach of the Titans.
Fallout and Investigation
Vrabel issued a groveling apology to his family and agreed to seek counselling, missing the final day of last week's NFL Draft. He returned to the team on Monday. Russini's only public comment has been a statement denying the allegations after leaving The Athletic. The New York Times, parent company of The Athletic, launched an investigation into the photos. She was placed on leave before ultimately resigning. Her contract was reportedly set to expire at the end of June. A bombshell ESPN report claimed Russini was given the chance to clear her name by the Times, yet she failed to do so.
