Texas native Janine Turner has enjoyed a remarkable Hollywood career spanning decades. The 63-year-old actress began her journey in the 1970s as a fashion model in New York City, landing top campaigns before transitioning to acting.
Early Career Breakthroughs
In 1980, Turner was cast on the hit TV series Dallas as Susan, a friend of Lucy Ewing played by Charlene Tilton. She also appeared on the soap opera General Hospital. Reflecting on her start, Turner told the Daily Mail, 'I was modeling at age 15 for Wilhelmina Models in 1978, it was really something. And it was amazing to start my career as an actress at age 17 on Dallas. My first day on set I sat next to Larry Hagman by the makeup stand. He was very nice and said, “Hi there!” in a full Texas accent.'
After Dallas, she packed her maroon Buick with eight-track tapes and moved to Hollywood, landing guest roles on The Love Boat, Happy Days, The A-Team, Knight Rider, and Quantum Leap. In 1989, she played Nancy Beth opposite Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton in Steel Magnolias.
Transformation and Northern Exposure Success
Turner grew tired of the scripts she received, saying, 'I had checked out of Hollywood. I thought, “I can't do any more bikini roles.”' She studied method acting, cut her hair, and removed her nail polish. 'Next thing I knew I booked Northern Exposure, which happened out of New York.' The show, a 1990s classic, featured Rob Morrow as a city doctor in remote Alaska. Turner played Maggie O'Connell and called it the highlight of her career. 'Maggie was a character I was waiting for. I stopped doing titty roles and worked with Marilyn Monroe's acting coach. I had $8 left in my bank account when I landed Northern Exposure.' The series now streams on Amazon Prime, gaining new fans. 'Kids stop me in parking lots saying, “Mom, there's Maggie!” It still holds up.'
Life After Hollywood
When Northern Exposure ended, Turner moved to Texas, bought a ranch, a pickup truck, and a horse. She raised her daughter there and starred as Katie McCoy on Friday Night Lights in 2008-2009. 'I felt good being back home in Texas. People ask if I would have done it differently, but I wouldn't. It was all about her.'
Romantic Life and Costars
Turner dated and costarred with Sylvester Stallone in 1993's Cliffhanger. 'It was amazing working with him. He was intelligent, funny, and generous. He has a great ability to write scripts.' She was also engaged to Alec Baldwin in the 1980s and dated John Corbett and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Another notable film was 1997's Leave It To Beaver, where she played June Cleaver.
New Projects and The Pursuit
Now behind the camera, Turner created, wrote, and directed The Pursuit, a vertical historical short series through her foundation Constituting America. The series dramatizes the courage of the Founding Fathers and Mothers, with new weekly episodes through July 4, 2026, honoring America's 250th anniversary. 'One of the main goals is to have everyone be aware of how we have fallen into a dictatorship with the consent of the people,' she said. '250 years later, I still can’t get over how powerful the founding story is.'
Turner is also working on two new directorial projects and starring in her own musical Belva, about Belva Lockwood, the first woman admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court bar. 'It's a story about inspiration and hope. I will dance and sing, with lots of tap dancing. Hopefully it will be Broadway bound in a year. It is on my bucket list to be on a Broadway musical.'
