The music world is mourning the loss of Billy Steinberg, the legendary Hall of Fame songwriter renowned for co-penning Madonna's iconic hit 'Like A Virgin'. Steinberg passed away at the age of 75 on Monday at his residence in Brentwood, following a courageous battle with cancer. His attorney, Laurie Soriano, confirmed the sad news to The Los Angeles Times.
A Career Cut Short Just Before His Birthday
Steinberg's death comes just days before what would have been his 76th birthday on February 26, adding a poignant note to the loss. Born in 1950, he spent much of his early life in Fresno, California, before later relocating to Palm Springs, where he continued to nurture his musical talents.
Partnership with Tom Kelly and Chart-Topping Success
Steinberg's most significant professional relationship was with fellow songwriter Tom Kelly, a partnership that began in 1981. Together, they crafted a string of monumental hits that defined an era of pop music. Their collaboration produced 'Like A Virgin', which Madonna recorded for her 1984 album of the same name. The song soared to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and various other charts, cementing its place in music history.
Beyond Madonna, Steinberg and Kelly's songwriting prowess extended to other major artists. They co-wrote Cyndi Lauper's uplifting anthem 'True Colors' and Whitney Houston's powerful track 'So Emotional', both of which became signature songs for these iconic performers. In recognition of their immense contributions to the industry, Steinberg and Kelly were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.
Early Musical Beginnings and Industry Impact
Steinberg's journey in music started with the formation of his group, Billy Thermal, which was signed to Planet Records. The band's track 'How Do I Make You?' was notably covered by Linda Ronstadt and included on her 1980 album 'Mad Love'. That same year, rock singer Pat Benatar also featured a cover of Billy Thermal's song 'I'm Gonna Follow You' on her album 'Crimes Of Passion', showcasing Steinberg's early influence across genres.
Throughout his career, Steinberg's ability to craft memorable melodies and poignant lyrics left an indelible mark on the music landscape. His work not only topped charts but also resonated deeply with audiences worldwide, making him a revered figure among peers and fans alike.
