Comic Relief has announced a staggering fundraising total of £30,004,040 from its annual Red Nose Day event, marking a significant achievement in its 40th anniversary year of combating poverty both in the UK and internationally. The charity fundraiser, broadcast live from Salford's MediaCity, was hosted by television personality Davina McCall and featured an array of comedy sketches and celebrity appearances.
Greg James' Mammoth Cycling Challenge Boosts Funds
Prior to the main broadcast, radio presenter Greg James contributed substantially to the total by completing an epic 1,000km cycling challenge over eight days. His journey, dubbed Radio 1's Longest Ride, culminated at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Red Nose Day, where he was greeted by cheering crowds and bagpipe music. James raised over £4 million through this endeavour, with highlights including a surprise visit from Prince William and a Red Arrows flyover.
Reflecting on the experience, James admitted it was a "stupid idea" but expressed immense pride in the outcome, stating, "It's been such a struggle at times, but everyone has got me through all of it." He emphasized the joy of connecting with supporters along the route, adding, "Wave at people, be good to people and if you can make someone's day, you should." The full amount from his challenge will be revealed on his breakfast show on Monday, 23 March.

The Red Nose Day broadcast, titled Comic Relief: Funny For Money, aired on BBC One, iPlayer, and the BBC's official YouTube channel from 7pm to 10pm on 20 March. It featured a lineup of comedy legends, including Joel Dommett, Katherine Ryan, Nick Mohammed, and Catherine Tate reprising her popular Nan character from The Catherine Tate Show.
Notable sketches included a sequel to The Traitors: The Movie, starring Iain Stirling, Vicky Pattinson, and Alison Steadman, and a segment based on the comedy show Amandaland, with Lucy Punch joined by celebrities like Amanda Holden and Amanda Barrie. These performances helped drive donations throughout the evening.
Significant Donations and Charitable Impact
Major contributions came from high-profile donors, with the band Coldplay adding £100,000 to the pot and The Hunter Foundation, a Scottish philanthropic organisation, making a matched donation. The funds raised will support Comic Relief's mission to provide essential resources such as food, healthcare, and shelter to those in need globally.
While last year's event raised £32 million, this year's total underscores the ongoing public support for the charity's efforts.
