Mariah Carey has responded to claims that her long-running feud with Eminem began after he offered her the role of his mother in the 2002 film 8 Mile. The singer, 56, acknowledged there may be truth to the story but said she does not care about the origins of the dispute.
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Carey told host Andy Cohen: 'From what I heard, there is truth to that, but I don’t think that he actually - well, who knows who approached who? I really don’t care. Like, whatever he’s said, then I’m that, fine.'
The role ultimately went to Kim Basinger, who is 15 years older than Carey. The semi-autobiographical film starred Eminem as Jimmy Smith Jr, a car factory worker trying to make it as a rapper, and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Lose Yourself.
In June, producer Damion Young claimed on the TFU Podcast that he introduced Carey and Eminem after the rapper wanted to discuss a role. Young said Eminem asked Carey to play his mother, which he said 'kicked in her insecurities big time.'
The feud between the two artists dates back to the early 2000s, with Eminem claiming they had a six-month relationship, which Carey has denied. They have exchanged insults in songs, including Eminem's Superman and Carey's Clown, and more recently in tracks like The Warning and Lord Above.
