Prue Leith Shares Candid Reflections on Her Career and Personal Life

Prue Leith, the renowned restaurateur, chef, broadcaster, and writer, has opened up about her experiences, from her early days to her current projects. Born in Cape Town in 1940, Leith built a multifaceted career that includes founding Leiths School of Food and Wine, authoring over 16 cookery books and eight novels, and serving as a judge on popular TV shows like Great British Menu and The Great British Bake Off.

Early Struggles and Parental Influence

Leith recalls being "pretty useless at school", facing expulsion for disruptive behavior. However, she credits her parents for instilling unwavering confidence. "They were encouraging and never said: 'Don't climb that tree, it's dangerous!'" she notes, highlighting how their belief in her abilities fueled her success.

Business Ventures and Family Balance

Her entrepreneurial spirit led to ventures like a Michelin-starred restaurant and a catering company. Despite her busy schedule, Leith managed to balance work and motherhood, often surprising her children with her professional achievements. "I've fooled you!" she thought when her son questioned her business ownership, as she prioritized weekends for family time.

Overcoming Sexism and TV Challenges

Working in male-dominated industries, Leith faced subtle sexism, such as during her time on the British Railways board, where she had to request equal treatment. Her early TV experiences were also challenging, with a controlling director leading her to avoid television for decades before embracing roles on Great British Menu and Bake Off.

Life After Bake Off and Future Plans

While stepping back from Bake Off, Leith is not retiring. She plans to focus on more TV work, European holidays, and her garden. Her new book, Being Old and Learning to Love It, reflects on aging positively. "I don't think I will feel any sense of yearning when I see Nigella in that position," she says, emphasizing her contentment with past experiences.

Legacy and Continued Passion

At 86, Leith remains active, attributing her productivity to happiness. "It's hard, maybe impossible, to be this upbeat and productive if you are unhappy," she concludes, showcasing her enduring drive and optimism.
