Steven Knight Shares Update on Oasis Documentary and Says the Band Are 'Fantastic to Work With'

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has called his upcoming Oasis documentary "phenomenal," revealing that he and his team have managed to whittle it down to a mere four hours. Knight is behind the new project, which will include exclusive footage from the long-awaited Oasis reunion tour in 2025, as well as behind-the-scenes access to rehearsals and meetings.

Exclusive Access to Reunion Tour

The anticipated shows took place 15 years after the notorious backstage brawl between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, which led to the band's split in 2009. Knight, along with directors Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace—known for the 2023 documentary Meet Me in the Bathroom—has created and produced the film.

"It's phenomenal," Knight told the Project Big Screen podcast while promoting his Peaky Blinders film The Immortal Man with lead actor Cillian Murphy. "It's a documentary with a plot—do you know what I mean? It's actually got a story... it's been great, [the band have] been great, they're fantastic to work with."

Gallagher Brothers' Dynamic

Knight highlighted the brothers' humor, noting, "I interviewed them [and] they're just one quote after another, they're just so funny." This marks a shift from their past notoriety for swipes at each other in interviews and on social media. The documentary is expected to delve into how they patched things up enough to perform together again onstage.

Oasis shared a moment of reflection in November last year after their record-breaking tour concluded in São Paulo, Brazil. On Instagram, they stated, "'The most damaging pop cultural force in recent British history' found its way into the hearts and minds of a new generation," referencing venues from Gallagher Hill to the River Plate. They concluded, "There will now be a pause for a period of reflection."

Backstage Revelations and Future Plans

Rumors swirled at the end of last year about more shows in 2026, but The Independent understands that Noel and Liam are taking a year off from live gigs, as both siblings and their teams "all need a break." Sources described chaotic but jubilant backstage scenes after each show, with football stars like Jack Grealish and Phil Foden mingling with Noel and his longtime friend Richard Ashcroft, who opened for the band nightly.

One source said, "It's been a proper love-in backstage... It's like going to a wedding every night," noting a friends and family bar with free booze. These moments are likely to feature in Knight's documentary, alongside insights from the brothers themselves.

Noel Gallagher's Response and Release Details

Appearing backstage at the Brit Awards last month after collecting the Songwriter of the Year award, Noel said that anyone who had seen clips of the documentary called it "amazing," and he looked forward to seeing it in full. He rated the shows as "10 out of 10" and "better than the Nineties," admitting it was "overwhelming in places to see the love for the band after all these years."

A release date for the documentary has yet to be announced, but anticipation is building for this in-depth look at one of Britain's most iconic bands.
